SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENTARY REVEALS THE DEEP SEA OF MADEIRA (WITH VIDEO)

A scientific documentary about the depths of the sea surrounding the archipelago of Madeira will be shown, for the first time, starting next Friday, at 10 pm, on RTP-Madeira.

According to the Regional Directorate for the Environment and Climate Change, this work is the result of 10 dives aboard the LULA 1000 submarine, from the Rebikoff foundation, which allowed a group of sea science experts, Andreia Henriques, João Clode, Manuel Biscoito , João Delgado and Pål Mortensen, document “the first glimpses of the deep sea off the island of Madeira”.

“The mission was focused on collecting information about the Marine Garbage, but, a thousand meters deep, in absolute darkness, the LULA lights revealed a whole new world, the deep waters of Madeira are, after all, a biodiversity hotspot in the Atlantic “, underlines the regional direction.

The premiere takes place on Environment Day – June 5.

“This is a project with which DRAAC became deeply involved to learn about our environmental status, particularly in terms of marine litter, as well as to learn about our natural heritage, species and deep sea habitats”, says Manuel Ara Oliveira in dissemination of this production.

According to the regional director, this documentary “brings to the public small excerpts from the enormous source of information of scientific interest that has been collected and that will be properly treated in the coming years by different types of specialists, from different Portuguese and foreign laboratories and research centers”.

“This first mission was also intended to provoke. To provoke curiosity, to provoke the opportunities that are so many and in so many areas, from geology to biology, from monitoring to conservation, from the environment to underwater heritage, from science to leisure. And they are already there, so close “, he concludes, hoping that viewers will like what scientists will be able to contemplate.
