Travel writer Simon Parker today wrote an article in the renowned British newspaper ‘The Telegraph’, reporting on his recent trip to Madeira, where he rode his bike across the island. It was his first trip abroad in six months. In the publication, he stresses that Madeira “could become the two-wheel hotspot this autumn and winter”.
The work is extensive, and describes much of his adventure cycling around the island. In addition to writing and photography, it is complemented with a video, which you can watch below, explaining why Madeira is the perfect destination for cycling.
Simon Parker underlines “unlike mainland Portugal, Madeira maintained its ‘travel corridor’ status, which means that British tourists can visit without having to be quarantined on their return. Arriving passengers are tested on arrival and – once the result is negative in 12 hours – they can move freely ”.
He also mentions that the use of facial masks is mandatory, that the hand sanitizer “is as common as at home”, and considers it comforting to know that there are only about 50 active cases of Coronavirus, at any one time.
In this regard, it highlights that, “unlike the UK, rigorous testing of newcomers is allowing the tourism industry to keep its head above water, while slowly eradicating the virus entirely.”
The travel writer believes that mountain biking is much more established in Madeira, while road cycling “is still a relatively new hobby”.
