Cable Car Queue

Thanks to Sus Willder for these photos of the queue at the cable car this morning.

With 3 cruise ships in the Balmoral, Aidasol, and the brand new Arvia, the queues are the longest I have seen.

The weather is also perfect with clear skies, and a top temp of 24° degrees today.

  1. Would like to see the queue at the top in Monte to come down on the toboggans. When we were there in November it was horrendous when the Ariadne was in

  2. There is a danger Madeira oversells itself. This will result in tourists saying I’m not going there again its all too busy. There has to be a comprise between big cruise ships numbers of visitors and being able to enjoy the experience of visiting Madeira.

  3. Hear, hear Roger, my wife and I have visited Madeira many, many times for the last nineteen years, it was a very well kept secret, our last visit was in September, (post covid) and it has changed for the worst.
    Brits that would normally holiday in Spain etc,etc, found Madeira during the lockdowns and have returned in numbers, Easyjet, and Ryanair have increased flights to the island with lots of cheap flight deals from the continent, and so far from being sold as a ” holiday for the newly wed, or nearly dead” does not apply.
    It is with great sadness that we will not returning, as it was like our second home.

  4. Madeira has already done that Roger let the island generate some money from tourism while it can as the future looks very bad with current economy crises and all this talk about the next pandemic cost of living etc. the future is not looking great.

      It seems that you have a crystal ball to forecast the future ! Maybe you can go help the UK government with their forecast for the future that isn’t very good in this moment .

Madeiran business owners seem delighted with the influx of tourists and the tourists themselves don’t seem bothered about the crowds, they’re the type who love being surrounded by other Brits or Germans talking loud and wearing shorts. The only ones complaining are expats who are seeing prices rises too and now there favourite places aren’t so quiet and just for them anymore. I can’t say I enjoy the crowds of tourists but it’s undoubtedly good for Madeira from an economic standpoint.

  6. Lavinia complete right about everything and sometimes this excess of tourists is from the big boats that come and isn’t every day. Have a nice new year . The same happens in Sintra a few months was very quite and now the tourists are returning back next will be quite again .

We visited Funchal in early December on Marella Explorer – got dropped off by coach near the centre – started walking around a got chatting to a local taxi man – who took us the botanical Gardens – then Toboggan run and then back up to Cable Car for trip backdown – no queueing anywhere – all done in a few hours so went back to boat – went back into for the evening to the Xmas lights as it was their first day on – such a lovely place – Long may it continue – definitely a revisit soon

  8. Are you two related by any chance? Enjoy it while it lasts as for the UK being in trouble it soon spreads very fast onto other countries especially the EU.

  9. Just returned to UK (26/12/22) after 14days holiday. Despite there being cruise ships arriving virtually every day we had no issues with crowds and queues. Funchal has adapted to the cruise industry with plenty of expensive upmarket outdoor
    Cafes catering for cruise passengers. The local restaurants close to the cable car area and port area do not appear to benefit from the cruise passengers,simply because the passengers are going to return to their ships for meals rather than spend on food whilst on shore. Because of Funchals steep hills etc most cruise passengers tended to congregate around the christmas market area these past two weeks whilst we were there. Is the cruise ship industry good for Funchal?
    In my opinion it’s debatable as cruise passengers do not spend significant amounts when ashore, especially as there is no duty free shops as there are in the Carribbean. Port charges and employment in the port is a plus for Madeiras economy. I visited Madeira on a cruise during October (Sky Princess) and was charged an excessive taxi fare to return to the ship from cable car rank which was twice asmuch as I paid to return to the Savoy Palace this last two weeks. So if the cruise industry is the golden egg beware of killing the goose that lays it
