Bad News For New Year’s Eve

Below is the statement from the IPMA regarding the weather over the next few days for Madeira, and thus will be updated again Friday 6pm.

Before the statement, and will say the The weather has changed so quickly from a couple of days ago, when it looked like we would have a totally dry NYE.

I have been in Madeira for 18 tears, and this will be my 19th NYE, abs I have to say, nearly all have been good weather. Some we might have had very weak rain, especially in the higher areas.

One NYE when I was in Funchal, this was the year the ABBA tribute band played in town after the fireworks, that year we had rain, heavy showers on and off, but we found somewhere dry, and the rain soon stopped and we enjoyed a great evening. This was the only year I had actually been down in town.

Another year when my mum was here, we had bad weather all day, and the cloud was very low, I had left my car at the Neves view point as this is where we were all going to see the fireworks, and you couldn’t see anything when I left my car there.

Later we all got to the viewpoint, and the cloud was still so low, everyone was deciding what to do, but the forecast was it would clear, and sure by 11pm, all the cloud suddenly disappeared.

So in my years on the island NYE has always been great, but could this year really have the authorities wondering what to do???

I has many years ago been cancelled and the fireworks have happened on the followibg night, so this year I think everyone is going to be wondering what to do, and keeping a close eye on the weather as it’s changing always.

So below is a summery of the weather for the next few days.

Special IPMA Information.

Statement valid between 2023-12-28 17:41:00 and 2024-01-02 23:59:00

Subject: Weather forecast for the Madeira
archipelago between December 29 2023 and
January 2 2024.

The weather condition for the Madeira
archipelago in the period between December 29
and January 2 will be conditioned by an
anticyclonic region located over the Atlantic and the approach of a trough at altitude.
During the period of this statement, there will bea possibility of precipitation every day, – starting
in the afternoon of the 29th with the passage of a cold front surface, which will be generally
weak.

The probability of precipitation is higher for December 31st, over 75%, due to the approaching system at altitude to the west of the archipelago.

On January 1 and 2 the probability of precipitation decreases considerably.

Wind will be weak to moderate from the southern quadrant through mid-afternoon on 29th, rotating temporarily into the northern quadrant through 1st.

Temperatures will remain mild for this time of year.

Please keep an eye on my blog, as updates will be daily as we head towards NYE.

For me this will be interesting to see how this plays out, but for many it could be very disappointing. We can’t control the weather, and I still think it could change fir the better. ?
