The leader of the CDS-PP/Madeira gave a press conference, earlier this evening, to read a statement in which he asked that Miguel Albuquerque’s resignation, presented this morning to the Representative of the Republic, take “immediate effect”.
The immediate fall of the Executive will allow PSD and CDS to present a new government, with support negotiated with the PAN.
The new government would quickly take office and present a budget for this year.
“The CDS-PP Madeira understands that this position safeguards the interests of a region that has registered notable economic growth, above the national average, that has overcome a pandemic and that has successfully faced an unprecedented economic crisis, and where there is a social commitment in the areas of health and education, unlike what happens on the continent”, he explained.
Rui Barreto’s position contrasts with what has been advanced in recent days, but it could be the political ‘way out’ of the crisis.
The leader of the CDS-PP/Madeira also left arguments to counter a possible intention by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to dissolve the regional parliament.
“It is important to highlight that, unlike what happens in the Republic, where the Government is dependent on the political assessment and trust of the Assembly of the Republic, but also of the President of the Republic, the autonomous mechanism makes the Government’s trust solely and exclusively dependent on the Assembly regional”, he stated.
Therefore, Rui Barreto understands that “with the Regional Legislative Assembly in full function, being legitimately elected, and guaranteeing the necessary confidence in the indicated governing cast, there will be no objective reason, legal or political, for the President of the Republic to exercise his political veto”.
