More than one and a half million bottles collected in 2023 in ECM machines

The Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira (ECM), currently with thirteen reverse vending machines, distributed throughout the region, presents very positive results in the total number of glass bottles collected in these devices. In 2023, a total of 1,673,445 bottles were collected via this route. This data translated into growth of almost 30% compared to the same period last year and 36% compared to 2021.

A market study carried out for ECM, on a sample of 300 individuals, beer consumers, reveals that the overwhelming majority (94%) of consumers are already aware of the system for reusing and recovering the value of the bottle deposit.

The data obtained reveals that the average return value per consumer is €1.49.

Read the ECM press release:

“Collecting glass bottles is an ecologically responsible measure, as glass is a material that can be recycled many times without losing quality. Glass bottles are used an average of 40 times. By providing this opportunity, involving consumers as they return the bottles, the company Cervejas Madeira is contributing to the saving of natural resources, the reduction of energy needed to produce new bottles and the reduction of associated carbon emissions to the production of new glass.

Furthermore, the implementation of collection machines also promotes the cleanliness of the local environment. Bottles discarded incorrectly can become polluting waste when they are not properly returned or placed in the glass recycling, for example.

From a sustainability perspective, collecting glass bottles aligns with the mission of reducing waste and promoting the reuse of materials.

ECM also sees this initiative, which has generated very positive results over the years, as an opportunity to involve its customers and the local community. Promoting the return of glass bottles not only strengthens the brand as an environmentally responsible company, but also builds a stronger relationship with consumers who share sustainability values.

The collection of glass bottles using machines from the company Cervejas Madeira is an example of sustainable practices that bring environmental, economic and social benefits. This approach not only helps preserve the environment, but also demonstrates the company’s commitment to making a difference in promoting a more sustainable future for everyone.”
