Banana sales grew 18.7% in the first 4 months of 2024

In the first four months of 2024, “6,623.5 tons of bananas from Madeira were sold”, which represents an increase of 1,045.1 tons compared to the same period of 2023, that is, an increase of 18.7%, according to data provided by the Regional Directorate of Agriculture and Rural Development (DRADR) and released today by the Regional Directorate of Statistics of Madeira.

“Of that total, 80.5% was shipped (78.7% in the 1st quarter of 2023), with the Mainland as its main destination”, says DREM. “Compared to the same period in 2023, all categories registered increases. Bananas in the extra category increased by 13.1%, the first category by 62.9% and the second category showed a growth of 12.4%”, he also announced.

According to DREM, it should be noted that in the four months in question, extra bananas represented 78.6% of the total bananas sold, which compares with 82.5% in the same period last year, equivalent to a drop in the extra banana’s share of 3. 9 percentage points”, and “April was the month in the first four months of 2024 with the highest volume of banana sales (1,956.6 tons). February was the month with the least sales of this agricultural good (1,427.6). tons), but, however, it was the one with the biggest year-on-year increase (+44.0%)”, he concludes.
