“Opera no Pico” starts tomorrow with fireworks

Event organized by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, through the Regional Directorate of Culture, is materialized by the Associação Cultural e Artística Imperatriz Sissy.

The Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, through the Regional Directorate of Culture (SRTC/DRC), promotes for the first time, in 2024, a cycle of operatic programming in the Fortaleza de São João Baptista do Pico, called “Ópera no Pico”. This is a new opera event with varied programs, which aims to contribute to the projection and appreciation of this total art form, crossing tradition and avant-garde in open-air performances in Fortaleza do Pico, with remarkable experiences that encourage the creation of new public interest.

The most recent proposal from SRTC/DRC for Fortaleza do Pico is materialized through the Associação Cultural e Artística Imperatriz Sissy, envisaging the holding of four opera shows coinciding with the nights of the “Festival Atlântico” in June (the 1st, 8th, 15th and 22), festivity promoted by the Regional Secretariat of Tourism and Culture, through the Regional Directorate of Tourism.

Four concerts will be presented with different programs, with the participation of singers from the Region as well as guests from the Netherlands, England and Mainland Portugal. The magnificent voices will be accompanied by different formations of instrumentalists, such as string trios and/or quartets, wind and brass quintet with piano.

The program presented by this Cultural and Artistic Association thus proposes new perspectives based on operatic “material”, in an attractive format that culminates with the pyrotechnic show over the bay of Funchal, with a view from the Pico Fortress.

All concerts start at 9 pm (the venue opens at 8 pm) and end at 10:10 pm, thus providing spectators with the opportunity to position themselves to watch the fireworks show. Tickets can be purchased for 5 euros at the concert venue, at the Tourist Office on Avenida Arriaga, at the Regional Directorate of Culture and at Fórum Madeira. The capacity for each show is limited to 200 people and this is an event not recommended for people with reduced mobility.
