President of the Regional Government said that the resources on the ground are sufficient.
The Government of the Republic contacted the president of the Madeiran executive to offer support in fighting the fires in Madeira, but Miguel Albuquerque said that the resources on the ground are sufficient at this time, a government source told Lusa.
“The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, contacted the President of the Regional Government to provide support in fighting the fires,” a source from Miguel Albuquerque’s office told Lusa.
The president of the Madeiran government, according to the same source, reported that “due to the difficult-to-access areas” where the fires are occurring, it is not possible to assign more resources and “even the helicopter cannot always act due to the wind”.
“At the moment, it is not necessary,” he reinforced.
A fire broke out on Wednesday in Ribeira Brava, one of the Madeiran municipalities in the western part of Madeira, and spread the following day to the neighboring municipality of Câmara de Lobos.
In the latest information released by the Regional Civil Protection Service of Madeira, in an update on the situation regarding the fire outbreaks at 8:00 pm, it was stated that the fire continues to advance towards Curral das Freiras”, one of the parishes in the municipality of Câmara de Lobos.
Madeira’s civil protection department indicated that an active front remains, “although outside the residential area” in Ribeira Brava, in an area inaccessible to land-based fire-fighting resources and “is considered to be without immediate danger” at this time.
A fire-fighting vehicle and three operatives from the rural fire-fighting team of the Ribeira Brava and Ponta do Sol Mixed Firefighters remain on site.
