Car access to Pico do Areeiro will be controlled by electronic panels and paid parking, and how I see the situation.

Lets face it they dont have a clue what they are doing. To many car retals, Pico do Areeiro  is not the only place with problems, and paid parking sould have been put in place right from the start when they knew about the amount of rental cars they have let into the island. Where did they think they were all going to park???

plus its brought like cost tourism, sleeping in cars, buy food from the supermarkets and eating in the cars and leaving the rubbish where ever they feel. Rubbish bins overflowing everywhere, the ness on the levadas still continues with shit and toilet paper everywhere .Weekends it’s impossible to park in many places, who has been to Calheta lately and tried to park at the weekend. ???

Let’s see if these barriers will work, but soon this kind of tourist will stop and the regular tourists that spent money, will not be back…..

There are already solutions in place and procedures aimed at public procurement already underway to control the excess of cars seeking to use Pico do Areeiro. The Government’s intention is to have the new measures in place by the beginning of next year.

The regional secretary for Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment announced that electronic mechanisms will be implemented to control vehicle entry, with barriers or gates, and there will be a panel informing drivers of the number of vacant or unoccupied parking spaces at Pico do Areeiro.

Speaking to Antena 1-Madeira, Rafaela Fernandes gave the example that, with 500 parking spaces, and all of them occupied, “the 501st one won’t fit”. In other words, “in essence, the limitation of access for private vehicles is related to the number of available parking spaces”, which will be monitored with barrier mechanisms and an information panel, which will allow, “further down, next to Poiso, the driver to know whether there is a space or not and when the forecast is for a parking space to be available”.

In addition, the government official revealed, works will be carried out in the car park next to Casa das Sorveiras, with the aim of increasing capacity and relieving pressure in the area.

Rafaela Fernandes highlighted that, in the area ascending to Casa das Sorveira, it will be reserved for cars with people with reduced mobility and tourist vans, further down another parking cell will be created and, further up, next to the Radar, for tourist buses.

As for parking prices, the first fifteen will be free, with people entering and leaving. Each fifteen minutes will cost 50 cents, which is two euros for each hour.
