REPORT OF ATTEMPTED ROBBERY OF STORES IN THE LIDO AREA

The businessman Dário Silva (Group Cafe Teatro) denounced, through a publication on Facebook, the attempted robbery of commercial establishments in the Lido area.

“Attention guys, today at dawn they tried to rob stores in Zona do Lido. Fortunately they were not able to enter! The warning remains.

What is happening to our Island !? Very worrying “, he wrote.

This sort of thing has been increasing over the last few months, and if the police don’t step up, it’s not going to slow down anytime soon.

  1. Not condoning this criminal behaviour but with the economic nightmare of covid-19 there must be some people who are really desperate ?

  2. I agree with Mary Gray, sad state of affairs sadly so many people are not any financial support AT ALL ?

      1. Furlough meant that 60% of wages would be paid, in the UK we paid 80%, don’t forget with transport savings, some people were better off. In the UK the 80% was paid wholly by the Government, in Madeira this meant businesses that were closed, with no income, understandably laid people off. Madeirans are hard working because they have to be. Think of the average hourly wage, then think of the price of a litre of petrol compared to the UK and then think perhaps I can put a little more on the tip. They deserve it. When was the last time you had bad service ?

        1. Price of cars is another good example, my car cost 3times the cost of the same in the UK, its absolutely disgusting, and the yearly tax is 225.00 a year for it. Fuel is about the same price and my insurance 3rd party is about 300 a year.

  3. Having lived here for over 35 years I have seen big changes on the social system
    This was unheard of however Crime is on the up & up and WHY?
    People are desperate & sadly taking desperate measures. There is a big divide on this Island & the poorest are suffering the most.

  4. People were poor in Madeira before and there was not this sort of crime…..the island has accepted a lot of people from Venezuela in last few years….wonder how well they have been able to integrate

  5. This year I have noticed an increasing amount of men in the car park at the Pingo supermarket begging and when you refuse to give them anything they sometimes plead. It is becoming more intimidating especially to people of our age 69 and 70. I am a retired police officer and can spot this type of anti social behaviour a mile away and what it can lead ti. I’m sure these young people begging will have an idea who is responsible for this crime. My intuition.

  6. The average visitor has no idea of the poverty in normal circumstances never mind during Covid . They see the beauty of the Island , the restaurants etc and nice hotels .
    People are desperate . They have families to feed . Mary , Joanna and Jackie are absolutely right.
    Furlough pay ? No .

  7. If I had a family with children to feed, had lost my job but still had all my bills to pay, I would be desperate.
    They probably have no one to turn to, and no help, and the only thing that they can do is to turn to crime as a solution. I just hope that a vaccine will be found very soon.

  8. Vaccine against crime would get more worldwide attention than vaccine to cure virus, but I jest. Jailing them cutting peoples hands off, exporting them to the colonies and even hanging them didn’t work in the past or the present.
    Desperation takes us all in directions we may not consider at better times, you then broker in addictions, feral upbringing and all the other things that exists in todays material world. So answer is, protect yourselves, protect your family, protect the vulnerable and if anything left protect your assets.

It is very worrying to see this happening in Paradise, but we also need to remember the extreme financial stress Covid is placing on everyone, but most of all on the very poor who are without money, food or shelter in many cases. I think these crimes are a sign of desperation and not true criminality. I am surprised actually there has been so little theft and robbery given our conditions. A testimony to the integrity and decency of Portuguese people. When Covid is over and full employment returns, we will not see this happening again.
