Madeira registers a new daily high with 1,690 cases of covid-19

As of January 7, 2022, 1690 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection are reported in RAM, so the region now counts 29706 confirmed cases of COVID-19. There are 61 imported cases and 1629 cases of local transmission. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

The Region now has 8963 active cases.

Regarding the isolation of these active cases, there are 69 people in the Dr. Nélio Mendonça Hospital, 66 in Polyvalent Units and three in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to covid-19. Another 75 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, the rest remaining in their own accommodation.

  1. At this rate there will be nobody left to get infected soon and the pandemic will effectively come to an end.

    1. I’d love to agree, but sadly we know that infection doesn’t confer immunity from further infection, especially when so many people worldwide are infected and each case is an opportunity for a mutation to cause a new variant.

      Roughly 1 in 28 people in Madeira currently have Covid and about 1 in 8 have had an infection at some point (comparable numbers for UK are 1 in 20 and 1 in 5). Even if you believe in ‘herd immunity’ (and I’m not suggesting you do – I read your comment as tongue in cheek, so apologies if this is too serious a reply!) a lot more people would need to get sick to end the pandemic.

      So much is not yet understood about the possible long term, effects including vascular and mental disease.
      Allowing widespread infection as England is doing (even using primary school children with no masks in school to be incubators of the disease) is grossly irresponsible.

      Vaccination, masks, testing, distancing, ventilation, hand sanitiser – we need to use all these mitigations and do our best to bring down infection rates whilst trying to keep the economy and education operating as near to normal as we can.
      I think Madeira is doing pretty well, but perhaps a ‘circuit break’ using a curfew as last year would be worth it to get numbers down?

  2. Excellent contribution from Gillian. Even when people wear masks, they are not following the 2 metre distance rule but standing close to one another and of course, in Madeira family members think they are immune when they hug and kiss each other….! Can’t believe numbers have gone from a handful before Christmas to what they are now. Madeira felt safe in November, not now!

    1. This is because distancing is vastly superior than wearing the masks. Masks were not so helpful during the pandemic (around 5-12% efficiency according to various studies), and they became slmost compeletely useless against Omikron. Instead, they bring significant discomfort and pollution and garbage to the nature. We need to keep all the protective measures against Covid but get rid of these masks, at least at most places.

    2. Always the same comment reagarding Madeirean families hugging and kissing. Yes, it is cultural. Leave those families hug and kiss. Just like it is cultural British people not washing their hands.

  3. Very well said Gillian, allowing the virus to spread even more poses high risk. People have become complacent and the results are showing. The argument with the masks is very flawed. Good masks protect the wearer and the ones around. The problem is the market is invaded with useless pieces of cloth and people don’t always wear them properly. There should be a certain standard of masks being made available and afordable and all the other nonsense banned. Especially when even going for groceries has become a hazard due to how crowded places are.
