Last night was tropical not only along the coast but also in the higher elevations of Madeira Island. At Pico Alto, located over 1,100 meters above sea level in the Funchal mountains, temperatures ranged from 21.2°C to 23.4°C.
Among the 20 IPMA meteorological stations in the archipelago (18 on the island of Madeira, Porto Santo and Selvagem Grande), the minimum temperature did not drop below 20 ºC in 12. The lowest value was recorded in Caniçal/Ponta de São Lourenço (20.0 ºC) and the highest in Funchal/Lido (22.1 ºC).
Before sunrise, around 8:00 am, temperatures reached over 25 °C at intermediate elevations, particularly at stations on the west coast: Prazeres and Ponta do Pargo recorded 25.7 °C at 6:30 am, while at Cancela/SRPC, 25.1 °C was reached at 3:30 am.
Only at the highest stations, Chão do Areeiro and Pico do Areeiro, the air temperature did not reach 20ºC during the early hours of the morning.
