Duartepc shared another great video of the firworks, just that smoke really stuck around towards the end…

Does anyone feel Madeira needs a new company or a new way with the fireworks?.

Looking at some other videos Japan’s looked totally amazing, and London and Sydney where great with the main focal points. Madeira’s are beautiful but I think a bit to far spread out, they don’t need to do this and can concentrate more on the bay of Funchal.

  1. Japan s fireworks were certainly different and colourful. Maybe a rethink is needed. for Funchal going forward.

  2. Having the fireworks all in one place would make the congestion and pollution worse.

  3. A combination of fireworks and laser show like in Dubai! Will reduce pollution and can make different and interesting themes every year!

  4. For something mind-blowing you should see the show put on by Singapore, 500 drones producing the most amazing displays in the sky. This link is to one video but there are others worth watching too.

    It makes you wonder how they can control 500 drones in such a way to create a beautiful and totally different show.

  5. Hi Tobi, I think it would be more spectacular if the fireworks were centred around the bay in Funchal, they are to far spread, still spectacular, but would look more amazing just in the bay.

    1. Yes without such great big gaps, it just looks like a lot of rich people letting them off in their back gardens along the motorway, just a waste of Money….

    3. In fact there were quite a few failures in this year’s display. Those up towards Monte had gaps where tubes failed to launch. Also, the type of firework have been much the same for many years. It would be better if they had fewer firing points say, from Barreirinha round to Parque Sta Catarina. The display could go on longer than 8 mins and have a greater variety of fireworks.

  6. There is the need to take advantage of Funchal’s natural anphitheare which makes the display unique. If the fireworks are concentrared on the seafront then it will be just the same as the other thousandish fireworks display that occur around the world this day…

  7. Sorry to be a kiljoy but fireworks are a dangerous pollutant,cause fires which Madeira doesnt need and they frighten animals which is even worse. But of course as long as us humans are having fun….what does it all matter

    1. I have a problem with that particular argument. I hope this is not the day where we (humankind) sit down and point the fingers each other saying who is more harmful to the envirorenment.

      Every day there are millions of people getting on an aircraft to go somewhere for fun. I haven’t seen flight restrictions and unlike fireworks, air transportation has a proven and quantified effect on Co2 emissions. So, my question is: why should my “fun” on a day per year watching fireworks should be restricted based on enviorenmental reasons? Is it so that others can make 4 or 5 flghts per year for fun?

  9. Use the money for better worth!!!! Could be another way to look at it, they are all just opinions none, some or any are worth considering, things evolve through need and discussion.

  10. The new year fireworks are a vital part of the Madeira character and tradition. But, if each year’s fireworks are exactly like previous years then interest could wane. Some thought needs to be put into future displays to give them the “wow” factor again.

    So there was a large cloud of smoke but, it soon dispersed. Compared to the smoke from the Australian fires which has now reached New Zealand 1500 miles away……

  11. I don’t believe that it would make sense to centralise the fireworks to the port. So everyone can admire the fireworks from their surroundings in a panoramic view. This is Madeira-owned ! Why join other countries to want to do the same? How are all the people in the harbour to be accommodated without wanting to step on others feet or to obscure someone else’s view? And what about the people who are locally bound, have to stay in hospitals or are out of frailty and not longer able to move in the mass of people?
    A few renovations in the types of fireworks – which I have already seen (from Germany) – might be good. I’ve been to Madeira a few times on New Year’s Day and I’ve always been inspired. And if I’m not in Madeira, every year I look at the fireworks from Madeira after my own German fireworks. Why, do you think, do I do that ?

  12. I remember a few years ago at the Atlantic festival when Russia did one of the Saturdays in June. They had fireworks which exploded in red and as they seperated they formed the shape of a heart. You never see anything like this in the New Year funchal fireworks which are much the same each year. They announce every year that this year’s fireworks will have ‘such and such’ a theme and if you didn’t know the theme you wouldn’t have a clue from watching the display as it just seems to be a favoured colour. The two things that needs to happen is for a different company to put on the display and more importantly a desire by the organisers to come up with something a bit more clever and creative like in the japanese display.

    I have witnessed the New Years display 5 times and to be honest, even though me and my partner will be in Madeira next New Year, we will not go and watch it again as the thought of waiting for 4 or more hours to see the same ‘groundhog day’ 8 minute display again is not that enticing.

    1. Exactly. A local bar owner I know said they should have got the Poles to do it as they put on a good show for the Atlantic Festival.

      1. The NY fireworks display is subect to a public tender. The Russian company just needs to meet the specified requirements and present the cheapest proposal…

        1. Antonio – I know the New Years display is subject to public tender and i know I shouldn’t but I do have the odd worry about public tenders in Madeira, but that’s another tinder box of its own !!

          1. Be careful what you say about brown envelopes being exchanged. There’s a couple out there who will attack you for suggesting thst such things could possibly happen. I know, I’ve been on the receiving g end ?

  13. I totally agree with the post of Steve.
    The NY fireworks have been much the same every year.
    I do prefer the Atlantic Festival Fireworks of different companies and nationalities that offer much more variety and longer duration.

  14. I was some what disappointed with the fire works display. In previous years they were absolutely spectacular. I will be back in Madeira again December and hope for a much better display.
