Two new cases in Madeira

Today there are 2 new positive cases to report, so the region now accounts for a cumulative total of 195 confirmed cases of COVID-19. These are 2 imported cases identified in the testing operation at Madeira airport, from the United Kingdom. According to IASAÚDE, there are four situations under study.

There is 1 new case recovered. The region now accounts for 141 recovered cases of COVID-19, so that today there are 54 active cases, of which 42 are imported cases identified in the context of surveillance activities implemented at Madeira Airport and 12 are cases of local transmission.

Given the chaos in the testing system and the absence of a working track and trace system here in the UK and a sharp increase in virus cases – it is likely that arrivals in Madeira will increasingly be bringing the virus with them. To protect Madeira – why does the government not put a temporary ban on UK visitors ?

    1. France and Spain are much worse with around 10,000 new cases a day, and UK is expecting this in the next couple of weeks. But we have a good control and the airport which is why numbers remain very low.

    Because me and my missus are going! We had our June holiday cancelled I will not have our Christmas holiday cancelled.

  3. Are people from areas of virus high risk happy to put the people of Madeira at extra risk ? That happened here in the UK when our inept government allowed uncontrolled access via Heathrow etc from countries with high levels of virus infection.
    41,000 deaths to date from the virus. And it’ s back with 3000+ new virus cases per day. And deaths are going up. Much of this also due to the selfish minority who fail to follow the rules.

    So Madeira Government you have a choice. Put up with potential virus carriers from the UK or protect your own. You don’t know what Brits might bring along with their luggage !

    1. I suggest you stay at home and lock the doors. Don’t meet family or friends. Wait two years for a vaccine(if you are lucky) OR Join the real world.

      I am 70 years old and have got this far without the virus. I am happy the schlep off to Funchal for over 3 weeks over Christmas.

  4. What is the procedure if a visitor arrives and tests positive at the airport. Are they kept in isolation somewhere, or repatriated to their home country. If kept in isolation how long for, and if the length of time exceeds their planned visit time are they sent home or kept on the island. Also if travelling with family is everyone kept isolated, including children?

    Asking because I have just returned from Madeira, thankfully virus-free, but due to return end of October with extended family.

    1. Obviously, if you are found to be positive you will be put into isolation until you are recovered. How long that is is unknown. It would be criminally negligent of any airline to knowingly allow someone with a dangerous infectious disease to travel on their airline. If you are worried that this might happen to you then you have the option to take a COVID-19 test within seventy-two hours of travelling.
      The work of our regional president and of the head of health here in Madeira is a shining example that other countries have decided not to follow.
      We will fight for our tourism but we are not interested in endangering our own people with selfish tourists who are indifferent to the pandemic.

  5. I’m afraid if Madeira did that it would never recover, waiting for a vaccine next year maybe. At the same time all airlines would go bust or have to charge £500 or more for flights to Funchal in the future. If that happens then we might as well stop coming to the vacation club and sell it off or just hand it back. UK holiday resorts benefitted by the staycationing or the eat out deals but what have Maderians had from locals only. Yes I am ashamed of the behavior of many living in the UK with COVID fatigue now doing as they please so local measures are going to have to happen but we cannot afford another total lockdown again. Unfortunately hysteria is meaning anyone with a cold ( runny nose or sneezing) is trying to get tested or a school or employer is insisting on a test before returning and this is getting silly. We live in Cambridge and without foreign tourists the town is a ghost town so I dread to think of how bad it must be getting for locals ( not rich retired immigrants) in Madeira where the reliance on tourists is so much greater. Anyway God willing we will be there offering support next week .

  6. It is interesting to observe social behaviour in the UK currently. The so called “great British public ” are hardly that. A sizeable % are plain selfish. And putting others at risk.As are tourists bringing / taking the virus with them. To and from the UK.

    One is able to lead a pleasant and near normal life here in the UK. Sainsbury’s deliveries, Amazon Prime and Netflix are a boon ! One can meet one’s family quite happily albeit with social distancing. And it is amazing how effective that working from home can be in many sectors . Why did many of us ever commute daily ?
    I do care though a lot about the futures for younger family members. Job losses and A levels and careers fouled up etc. And I am very very saddened to have lost two friends from the virus. That brings it home to one. It has been a great shock.
    Bravado is not a substitute for caution and social responsibility towards others. And unless the virus is contained until a vaccine is ready, there will not be reasonable levels of employment anywhere.

    PS: The new private hospital in Funchal is fantastic. Thoroughly recommended.

  7. We are currently enjoying a wonderful holiday in Madeira. The testing procedure at the airport was very efficient and there is a very good reporting trace system in operation that we respond to every day. The wearing of masks is appropriate……and compulsory when in enclosed spaces such as public transport and shops. We’ve eaten in restaurants where the social distancing and service have been exemplary.
    It’s disturbing to see the slight rise in Covid cases – but if they can be identified by the test system at the airport, there is a good chance that the virus can continue be managed. Stay safe lovely Madeira…….we love it here.

  8. I read with interest the number of confirmed UK imported case resulting from a test at the airport. It would be interesting to ascertain from whence they came. Not from where they flew from but where they live. Understand this might be touching privacy information but it would present a better picture for others.(If thay are interested) Bearing in mind there are several large clusters now in the UK. Yes I know it’s a big ask.
