Christmas decorations in the center of Funchal cost the Government 78,000 euros

The Regional Secretariat for Tourism and Culture hired Isabel Borges to place Christmas decorations on the Central Plate of Avenida Arriga, Avenida Zarco and Avenida Sá Carneiro.

For this work, the Regional Government will pay 78 thousand euros, including VAT.

Isabel Borges is a person known for her work in this area and, on the official basis of public procurement, she has 12 contracts, for a total of 326 thousand euros.

    1. Maurice do you perhaps know how many visitors one may invite to watch the fireworks from home who are not ‘family’. I have not been able to find any information in this regard.

      1. Hi, sorry I haven’t a clue on this one. Not sure what the local rules are on mixing with family, friends & neighbours are. We aim to watch from the roof of the apartment block where we are staying which is what we have done in previous years.

      2. I think the rules in the past were 15, but I’m not sure what is in place now. They are more worried about the emigrants and students all coming back, tourists are a much lower threat.

  2. I like this Christmas decoration very much, it is much nicer than the hectic flashing in blue.
    This kind of decoration conveys the contemplative Christmas mood much more.

Lots of hungry people our there ..the money could of gone too …when we’ve had a crap year … wasting money on fireworks and too many lights which of course us tax payers will have to pay for with all the other in creases that will come from covid…next year ..just making it tuffer for the working man….

Well, that fails to recognise that the lights and fireworks bring in a large amount of tourist euros in a normal year and even this year the investment will easily be good value when compared with the revenue from visitors. I’m not sure if you are a working man in Madeira but if you are there are considerable indirect benefits to you from all of this economic activity.

    2. Whilst I understand completely where you’re coming from Paul, with the massively increased numbers of tourists visiting the island to see the lights and fireworks, couldn’t it be said that they are paid for from the increased revenue from the tourists rather than the ‘working man’s taxes’?

    3. I’m sure you, as a taxpayer have every right to complain about the money spent on the lights. But aren’t you lucky to be paying tax, so many people have lost jobs. They would kill to pay tax. I recommend you read Dickens, A Christmas Carol, you may recognise the characters.

  6. Any contracts for the festivities and other annual events will be contracted some time back, ie lights, fireworks etc and therefore the contractors get paid, put them up or not!!!! In good times this is the right approach to protect the public purse.
    Maybe in future break clauses can be inserted, BUT then the contractors will build in to cover the exposure, so you pay extra for years on the basis its a annual possibility but in reality its an 100 year event.
