Madeira Food Bank

Last week I visited the Food Bank in Madeira. A great organisation that helps so many families over the island.

The Food Bank is now feeding more than 9000 families and could do with all the help they can get. It is really worthwhile paying a visit and seeing their work.  Below are links to their website and Social media.
I am told that there is almost zero coverage in the Journal or the Diario for what must be the most serious challenge so many families are facing, especially now in Covid times.
There are a small number of volunteers that help distribute the food.
It was interesting to see the food they had there in stock, they get some help from Social Security, and they supply a lot of white label items like cereal, rice, pasta, tinned items etc.
Then they have a stock of items they get donated to them, and also through donations of money to buy products.
The Food Bank also do a collection in supermarkets normally twice a year May and November, where you can donate items that are needed, and when these happen I will put this on my blog as a reminder.
Then you have the fresh food which is delivered every day, the supermarkets which have fresh produce that is just out of date, is then taken to the Food Bank in the morning, normally they get 2 deliveries each day, and then in the afternoon this is delivered to a lot of different organisations around the island, who then pass it on to needy families all in the same day, some deliveries might not get to the families till late at night, but it reaches all who need it. So this fresh food does not go to waste and can be used quickly before it’s no good.
