Madeira registers 111 new cases of covid-19 this Thursday

This Thursday, Madeira registers 111 new positive cases of covid-19, bringing the total number of cases to 3,078 since the beginning of the pandemic in the Region. The new cases detected report to 108 cases of local transmission, most of them already associated with contacts or contexts of positive cases. There are also three imported cases: 2 from Germany and one from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region.

This Thursday there are also 38 cases recovered, as well as the 23rd death associated with covid-19 in the Region, namely a 67-year-old man who died this morning at his home.

At the moment, there are 1,404 active cases, of which 128 are imported cases and 1,276 are cases of local transmission. It should be noted that 57 people are isolated in a dedicated hotel unit, 1,280 are in their own accommodation and 67 people are currently hospitalized (62 in Multipurpose Units and 5 in the Intensive Care Unit dedicated to COVID-19).

In addition to these confirmed cases, there are 199 new situations that are currently being studied by the health authorities, all related to contacts with positive cases, situations reported to the SRS24 line or by SESARAM.

With regard to the total number of contacts for the SRS24 Line (800 24 24 20), it now amounts to 30,707 calls and the Psychological Support Line of the Regional Health Department (291 212 399) counts to date 2,600 calls.

  1. Sad. We are now over 1% of the population infected.
    Why is going on holiday “essential travel” in the middle of a deadly pandemic? Why won’t everyone follow the rules that cut down transmission?
    Some people are just selfish.

    1. There are no holidaymaker flights to the island currently. Only to and from the mainland, São Miguel & Canaries.

      1. And Paris, Lyon, Luxembourg, Munich, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Berlin, Amsterdam, Warsaw, Prague…

    2. I know. I wish they would drop off the face of the planet and leave room for considerate people who can be reasonable and delay gratification (holidays, eating in a restaurant, shopping). We wouldn’t be in this mess if we didn’t have mindless hoards.

        1. The long-term economic consequences of a massive outbreak would be more dire than the temporary loss of revenue from tourism. As for shopping and eating, am I the only one with the internet? Most restaurants have take-away or delivery services, you can order stuff online…that’s still spending if the concern really is to help the local economy. I just don’t see why it’s necessary to gather when we can still easily treat ourselves from afar.

          1. We are very limited to online shopping here, and we don’t have any outbreaks on shops, supermarkets, bars or restaurants, or if we do then they are not telling us.

  2. Hi. I live in England. I’ve read the comments above. Two months ago booked to holiday in Madeira at the end of January. At the time I booked, it was provided that I would have to have a clear covid test before I could depart for Madeira, and covid in Madeira seemed to be minimal and under control. Sadly the steps taken proved to be not enough, but this was not apparent at the time. The regional government and the hotel were encouraging travel to the island. I have been reading Madeira Island News website often, and deeply sympathise with the people of Madeira who have got caught up in covid, like the rest of Europe. This seems to have come about partly from tourists, and partly from relatives etc returning from the Portuguese mainland? I’ve cancelled my travel reservation. I hope to come to visit in the future, and I hope the covid situation on the island improves.

    1. You have never had to have a covid test before departing for Madeira, this is a mix up with the airlines and the rules for Portugal, where we have our own rules in Madeira, and offer still free tests on arrival. Residents and Emigrants nerd a second test after 5 days, tourists do not, as the risk is or was very low fir them bringing covid and then spreading covid. Most cases have come from emigrants, then meeting up with their large families, and not being careful until the second test.

  3. Agree, what I find astonishing is “Stay At Home” advice especially during the Festive Season being ignored.
    Quite incredulous that these tourist are now justifying travels by pointing the finger at locals
    for ignoring restrictions.
    Travel and large gathering are a main contributor,why do some folks find it hard to understand.!

    1. Because when I was there for a month over the holiday period it was large groups of Portuguese speakers together that I saw not big groups of tourists. In fact I hardly saw any tourists at all and I wandered all over Funchal(and didn’t infect a single native).

      1. Your anecdote is hardly evidence that the locals are the ones doing all the infecting. Tourists and other travelers did contribute to a spike in new cases when previously it had been almost zero or even zero for a while. Any other claims about how “I only saw the locals gathering” and “didn’t see any tourists behaving irresponsibly” is wishful thinking or drawing conclusions from biased personal experience. I can just as easily say that I saw groups of tourists not wearing masks in crowded streets while talking loudly in English and German, or that large groups of them gathered and coughed incessantly in restaurants frequented by both locals and tourists. Still just anecdote.

  4. “Stay At Home Advice ” being ignored over the Festive Season has greatly contributed to the increase.
    I find it difficult to understand why non-essential travel is priority during a Global Pandemic.
    Why put yourself and others at risk,there are very little safe havens if any at present.

    As mentioned before my daughter is in the Medical Profession and many Covid
    sufferers arrived home from foreign travel early October till present.
    .
    Medics are furious that the now restrictions were not implemented sooner.
    We must all take responsibility for our actions as opposed to the lame excuse of
    blaming locals.
