PSP TAKES CONTROL OF CURFEW IN THE REGION

The control and inspection of the curfew between 11 pm and 5 am that came into force last night in the Autonomous Region of Madeira will be carried out exclusively by the Public Security Police (PSP), and it is not necessary, for now, to resort to the assistance of the National Guard. Republic (GNR), according to what JM learned.

According to what we learned, the Regional Command of the PSP will have transmitted to “several entities” regional that it feels “comfortable” with the capacity available to respond to the set of restrictions that were communicated on Sunday by the Regional Government, at the end of a meeting with the presidents of Chamber of the municipalities currently most affected by the pandemic [Funchal, Câmara de Lobos and Ribeira Brava], so it will not request the assistance of other police forces, namely from the GNR, to respond to what was determined by the regional political authorities.

However, if the evolution of the pandemic moves towards the installation of sanitary fences and / or municipal restrictions, the GNR military may be called upon to collaborate, as it happened not only in the initial controls at Quinta do Lorde, which welcomed those who arrived infected with the covid-19 to Madeira, as well as when restrictions were in effect over Easter weekend and Mother’s Day.

The PSP is the territorially competent force to carry out these measures in the Region and has, at this moment, a device composed of almost 800 professionals, but it no longer has the 40 agents who were in Madeira interning during a pandemic period, as these meanwhile returned to the continent.

The GNR Madeira Territorial Command, on the other hand, has about 200 military personnel, who only take action if asked to do so.
