Madeira with an above average covid-19 incidence rate

The Mais Diário section this Friday afternoon, reveals that the Region has different numbers from those in the rest of the country.

“Above average”. This is the title that makes the headline on the cover of Mais Diário this Friday afternoon, March 5th. Stats show Madeira has a higher incidence rate of Covid-19 to the rest of Portugal.

In the afternoon, we reveal that in the last 14 days, the 296 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants in the Region contrast with only 174 per 100 thousand in national terms.

  1. Not good news for Madeirans…😥 Hopefully now the vaccine rollout is underway things will get better.

  3. It’s a quirk of the measurement criteria.. The smaller the region then it only takes a small rise to look bad. Where I live there are roughly 9,000. We have 21 cases. This is the equivalent of 233 per 100,000 compared to a national average rate of around 140. But the smallest increase or decrease can make it look so much worse or better than it really is

  4. % by population is the same, it’s not good here; look at NZ by example half the deaths that we have and 14 x more population by volume. So NZ would have 882 to be comparable to Madeira or we should have 4.5 dead to compare to NZ deaths…
    Doesnt seem so rosy now in Madeira?

  5. Madeira has always been a little later than the rest of Europe concerning infection numbers.
    We always knew what to expect within a few weeks….

  6. The precise dates for the 14-day-period with 296 cases/100K inhabitants are not stated. I guess “cases” mean incidents. – Tobi reported for the period of 14 to 28 Feb a total of 840 new cases. For these to translate into 296 incidents, Madeira’s population would have to be around 283K inhabitants.
    The Madeira incidents rate for these 2 weeks equals 323 per 100K inhabitants based on the more likely 260K people.

    Tobi reported 840 new cases from 14 to 28 Feb giving an incidence rate of 323 per 100K with a population of 260K. For the 840 cases to calculate to 296 the population of Madeira would have to be 283K.

  9. People still don’t get that obviously countries/regions that are under strict lockdown will have lower incidence rates than the ones that are not. There is no science there. You shutdown the country and you get the results. This like closing a road to traffic for a month and finding out at the end of the month that that road has the best safety record. Wow! Surprising!

    Madeira has found a balance that very few countries have found. The economy is working, children are at school, people can walk freely up to 7pm, go to the restaurant, travel to other parts of the island, and still haven’t had deaths for a week. This is what the world should aim for. Not for random incidence rates.

This is what the world should aim for. Not for random incidence rates.” I wish I’d written that. I will add, in my opinion, humble it ain’t, Madeira has got it right from the beginning.

  11. Portugal had in the last days of January the world worst infection rate of 7d/100t = 880 and has now about 5 weeks later at an rate of 7d/100t = 55. This is also remarkable unique record. Difficult to compete with that. Czech Republic is an example that a Lockdown sometimes does not work. They ran with Lockdown in a real bad third wave.

    Portugal is now very close to the limit EU countries usually lift the travel restrictions. Second argument for restrictions: “Portugal has a majority of B.1.1.7 variant” will soon not be valid anymore, because all other countries have an increasing rate of more than 40% of this variant already, Germany was at 46% last week.

    Putting that together I would expect that travel restrictions within EU will be lifted for Portugal. Just hope nobody gets the idea to exclude the RAM.
