Germany puts Portugal on the ‘red list’

This Friday, Germany placed Portugal on the ‘red list’. This change means that travelers are required to comply with two weeks of quarantine when they return from our country. The information was revealed this afternoon by German health authorities.

The origin of this decision will be the significant increase in the incidence rate in Portugal, which registers 137.5 cases per 100 thousand inhabitants. The number of currently infected exceeds 30,000. More than a thousand cases were reported in Lisbon and Vale do Tejo in 24 hours.

Portugal, along with Russia, thus joins the list of countries that Germany considers areas at particularly high risk of infection due to the widespread occurrence of certain variants of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

The ‘classification’ pointed out by the Robert Koch Institut, the federal government institution responsible for monitoring and preventing diseases, is valid for two weeks, warning that limitations on circulation could be extended.

This classification, according to that German organization, takes effect from next Tuesday, June 29, at 12 noon. No reference is made to Madeira.

I believe that if you have recovered from Covid in the last 6 months, or have had both vaccines, then I don’t think you have to Quarantine, can someone confirm this.???

I also can’t find anything about Madeira, but I’m thinking they will not separate the islands, maybe someone can let me know on this also.

It just seems another year, just write it off and let’s see if we can all travel freely next year… ???

  2. The quarantine of 14 day applies to ALL passengers returning to Germany if “variant of concern” is declared.

  3. The Delta variant will run across Germany this Summer, whether Portugal is on the red list or not. I am not expecting life to be any near normal in Germany before November and they will be under a strict lockdown most of Autumn. I feel sorry for my friends in Germany, many of whom have become really depressed people in the last few months, to the point I got really concerned about them. The German govt simply does not know how to deal with this pandemic.

  4. Germany has imposed 14 day quarantine on all arrivals from the UK and imposed an essential journey requirement as well. They have already put forward a proposal to get all EU countries to introduce these restrictions.

  5. Unfortunately Madeira is include. Me as a German can Not believe this at all. Everybody is under quarantane No matter If vaccinated or not. It is a shame. The German government hast No clue how to deal with this at all. They separate the Islands in Spain but Not in Portugal. They put US on the red list one day after Britain puts us ob Green. Unbelivable

  6. What a carry on governments need to stop this bullshit so we go back to normal I would think a lot of countries will be in lockdown by the end of this summer including Portugal Madeira Azores.

  7. All those people doing the circular cruise on the World Voyager which visited yesterday are Germans and will have to quarantine when they get home. There are still two more of these cruises to run as well!

  8. Unfortunately this seems to apply to whole Portugal including Azores and Madeira, as Madeira is not listed as an exception this time (which they used to do in previous decisions). Also, as it’s in the category “virus variants”, it even applies to those who are recovered and/or vaccinated. Very frustrating.

  9. Sense of the measure is a delay the of the Delta variant. It was first found in india, then got the majority variant in the UK and has now traveled further to Lisbon area, where it is the majority variant now. The variant is more infectious than the Alpha variant, first found in the UK, and also seems to bring more people to hospital. Currently 4-5% of population in the EU is getting fully vaccinated per week, which is required against the Delta variant, so a delay of a couple weeks has a relevant effect.
    Nevertheless the german measure is temporarily. The variant was last time found in Germany already with 15% and might double per week. Shows, that the measure is quite late already. It is valid for 2 weeks now, might be extended to 4 but then will be over, because the Delta Variant will be the majority variant in Germany too.
    I think it would have been possible to delay the Delta variant more, if the UK had closed their borders to india earlier or the complete EU would have put the UK on the red list end of May already.Would have given us a couple weeks.
    I think it is typical for this pandemic that politicians delay measures because they are afraid of economical effects and as a result the economical effects are worse. Nevertheless I planned my next travel to Madeira.

    2. Delta variant is not dominant in Madeira. In fact, no cases of Delta variant have been found in Madeira yet. What Merkel’s government is doing should be treated as a crime because they are imposing economical sanctions in a region not for scientific evidence or sanitary evidence but because they want to. They are exerting power and punishing lots of people just because. This reminds me of another “famous” German people in the 40’s…

        I do not know what nationality you are, but I guess your comment completly disqualiies you in any serious discussion!
        1) I would add a “yet”: The delta variant is not YET dominant in Madeira.
        2) (That is my main point): A comparison of the actual german government with the Nazis is spitting on the graves of millions of victims of the Nazis. If you think the RKI is acting like the Nazis did, I doubt about your education in historical belongings!

        1. The Nazis started by invoking a non-existent sanitary issue to provoke economic harm in specific groups of people. You say that the variant is not dominant in Madeira, is that any different to any other region in the world? Just mad that within the EU borders they are shutting down borders based on futurology. All this should be annotated for the future.

  12. When will we all understand, this is new,everywhere are on a learning curve, do nothing,do something change direction as it changes is main way of dealing with this. As I’ve said a number of times,hands up,who would want to swap places with the people who are charged with making the calls, not me.
