So e more beautiful Christmas photos from Zuzia Gabiga in Poland.

Hi Tobi! Thank you so much for the guidebooks you’ve sent me. I really appreciate it 🙂

I’m sure your guidebooks will be a great source of ideas and information when I’m in Madeira next year. It’s even better because you write from your own experience, as a person living in Madeira for quite some time now.

I’ve been to Madeira twice so far but managed to see quite a lot from your list and I also did some canyoning as well.

Let me return a favour and show you another nice place to see in Poland, especially now in the Christmas season. To be honest, my visit to that place was actually inspired by one of your articles last week about best Christmas market destinations in Europe. Poland, represented by the city of Poznań, got the 4th place.

I’ve been to Poznań about two years ago, during summer, but have never seen it’s Christmassy version. Since it got so high on the best Christmas markets list I’ve decided to see what the fuss is about and check if it’s really worthy of a 4th place.

I was a bit sceptical at first (the main town square looks like a construction site) but when I got to Plac Wolności (Freedom Square) I was really amazed by what I saw. The square was filled with Christmas lights, lots of stalls serving delicious food and drinks like mulled wine or hot chocolate.

At one side of the square there was a big stage where you could listen to musicians playing Christmas songs or take part in one of many charity auctions. On the other side was a big Ferris Wheel illuminated by even more Christmas lights.

The atmosphere was really magical and definitely gave a Christmas vibe. It was worth the four hour drive (one way!) 🙂

Apart from the Freedom Square, Poznań has another Christmas location with even more stalls, a big ice rink and a ferris wheel three times as big, but I found it less enchanting than the first place I’ve visited in Poznań.

I took quite a lot of pictures in Poznań trying to capture the spirit of Christmas in its every aspect.

  1. What a lovely comment. Poland really is a stunning country. We have been to many Polish cities including Poznan and love the country and it’s people, maybe I’m biased as my husband is Polish lol ! Merry Christmas everyone or Wesolych Swiat to any Polish speakers ! Xx

  3. I agree with the above sentiments. I first went to Warsaw for 2 weeks in the depths of winter during the dark days of communism. Solidarność had been rounded up and jailed and the Red Army were on the border ready to invade. I also went through to Lodz to fix a computer there. Despite the conditions the locals I met and worked with were wonderful. Later just as communism was collapsing and the Berlin wall was about to fall I and a group of railway enthusiasts went to Poland where steam trains were still in regular use. We travelled around the country then into Russia.

    Poland now stands proud, albeit moved about 100miles to the west from its original location, as one of Europe’s top nations.

    Poland has a fascinating history. A 1,000 years back it encompassed the Baltic states, much of Belorus and the Ukraine. A vast land from the Baltic to the Black sea. Also, it had kings that were elected. Over time various invaders took chunks of the country until in the end Polish lands were occupied by the Prussians, Russians and Hapsburg empire leaving just the city of Warsaw and some surrounding land as Poland. It was finally reunited in 1918 only to be carved up by the Nazis and Russia in 1939. At the end of WW2 some of eastern Poland was absorbed into Russia, eventually Belorus. Chunks of east Germany & Prussia were added to Poland. Effectively shifting the whole country to the left. This of course led to several displaced people, a sad time.

    A country well worth visiting.
