‘Christmas in the Square’ excites around 130 stallholders

The Funchal City Council project ‘Natal na Praça’ began this Sunday, December 3rd, taking place at the Mercado dos Lavradores.

The vice-president of the municipality, Cristina Pedra, was present at the start of the initiative that aims to boost the local economy by holding themed fairs on every Sunday in December, the 3rd, 10th and 17th, from 9am to 9pm.

This year there are 42 traders present per Sunday, for a total of 126, six more than last year. Cristina Pedra states that the expectation is for “greater attendance” with the aim of surpassing the sales volume recorded in previous years: “We would like to beat the record of other years, which recorded an average sales value of 25 thousand euros per Sunday” .

The mayor highlights that ‘Christmas in the Square’ is already “a reference for many artisans”, being a way for the municipality to support stallholders, giving space to the promotion of small brands.

‘Christmas in the Square’ takes place in Praça do Peixe in the illustrious building located in the historic area of the city of Funchal. Today’s fair is dedicated to fashion, accessories and decoration.

Next week, on December 10th, the stars of the initiative will be typical Christmas delicacies. Finally, on December 17th, ‘Natal na Praça’ will provide a stage for all participants in the Thematic Fairs organized on Thursdays at the Mercado dos Lavradores, where everything from antiques and second hand shops, handicrafts, jewelry and gastronomy will be on sale.
