José Reis, the lord of the ‘lambecas’ of Porto Santo, has passed away

Such sad news, and what a great age, and was still working. R. I. P. ????.

This afternoon, José Reis, the famous lord of the ‘lambecas’ of Porto Santo, passed away.

He was 94 years old and had been hospitalized for almost a month at Hospital da Luz, in Lisbon, where he died today at around 7pm, a victim of illness.

I love Lambecas, and will continue to eat at least one a day when in Porto Santo. Photo taken April 2023

‘Lambecas’ don’t age

For around  60 years, anyone visiting Porto Santo has had a mandatory stop, right in the center of the town that has since become the city: the kiosk selling the popular ‘lambecas’, ice creams that have become a hallmark of the island.

He was a well-recognized and loved figure on the island of Porto Santo, mainly due to his kiosk, in Vila Baleira, which became famous for its delicious ‘lambecas’ ice creams. A successful trajectory that began in 1958 and marked several generations of Porto Santos, Madeirans and many foreign tourists who every year make an obligatory stop in that space on their visit to the golden island.
