IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR UK NATIONALS

Thanks to Tig James for posting this on the British in Portugal Facebook page.

Below is a post from British in Europe regarding the Minimum Income Requirement (MIR) that has a back bench motion being put forward in the next two weeks.

This is where a UK national has a partner (of which there are many in the EU) who is an EU citizen and the income requirement to move back to the UK has been massively raised making it impossible for them to return.

Can you imagine being British and not being able to return to the UK with your family??? Many are in this situation, the most common where there are elderly parents in the UK but they live in the EU with their EU spouse and children. Also, many moved to the EU pre-Brexit and so, at the time of moving, it wasn’t a problem.

Please write to your MP in the UK asap, the template is in the post below too to make it easy for you. This affects so many of us and none of us know what the future holds so could affect you too if it doesn’t already.

  1. I think this is so unfair and in many circumstances cruel.
    Who in their right mind thought Brexit was going to improve things. Far from ‘taking back control’ the UK is collapsing into itself with less freedoms, less money and less support. How many people who voted to leave actually gave any real, deep, nuanced thought as to how it would affect us all. That’s it, I’ve said my piece.

  3. As one of the many Scots who did NOT vote to leave EU in the Brexit poll, and one who
    loves visiting Madeira, it fills me with sadness that those with family still in UK will be so badly treated with regard to returning especially in situations where their loved ones may desperately need them. Not good policy-making!

I emigrated at 37 from the UK and have been living on Madeira for the past 17 years, I have been married to my Portuguese wife from the mainland (who I met here 15 years ago) along with our son Pedro, I can say despite all the challenges of working on Madeira, we’re well established and we wont be heading for the UK, bar holidays.
    So I can well imagine reading that will send shivers up the spine of UK citizens in romantic relationships with any foreign citizen, its going to send some dead cold… Its like the Portuguese D7 Visa in reverse, but with huge differences in the financial requirement to support a family in the UK.
    The UK is no longer part of the EU, hence Brits are no longer able to live and work where they wish within the EU block. As Tobi has written, Brexit happened after many were already residing in the EU and have since met a foreign partner.

  5. It sounds worse than it is. the new rules mean you have to have a combined household income of £29,000 which is below the national average salary. Most pensioners who moved abroad have a State pension and a Private one which together would be above the threshold.

  6. Well I did live in UK from 1999 until 2019 and I will not return back to live anymore that part of my life is closed .And I think the time that I lived there it was the best years of the UK was a country and did change beyond changed beyond all recognition not anymore the country I
    the country I knew from years ago complete broken and divide and it is sad seeing that to happen .
