Rum from Madeira is expected to earn more than 5 million euros this year .

The president of the Regional Government took advantage of the 75th anniversary of the company J. Faria e Filhos Lda. to ensure that “Rum Agrícola da Madeira is one of the most prestigious and best-selling drinks in the country”.

He highlighted the launch of a new 45-year-old Rum and made it known that this year the Madeira Agrícola Rum is expected to exceed 5 million euros in sales.

He welcomed the commitment to new products “always with added value”.

Previously, Miguel Faria, administrator of J. Faria & Filhos Lda, reviewed the most notable moments, highlighting, in 2007, the inauguration of the new facilities and, in 2013, the acquisition of Engenhos do Norte, in Porto da Cruz.

He took advantage of the occasion and the large audience to announce the construction of “a new cold store”, already in an advanced stage of construction next to the company’s headquarters, in Santo António.

He hoped that these 75 years of achievements could continue, assuming J. Faria’s ambition to “continue to grow and innovate”.

  1. It’s a very pleasant rum,I bought a bottle last year only to put it in the cupboard next to the one I bought the year before,unfortunately rum always seems and tastes better in warmer countries and it’s not quite so comforting in the cold ,hail stones we having at the moment ????

    Have you noticed that our young, non-aged island rums has doubled in price since late 2022? Our home distilled rums should be 30% cheaper than any other imported rums, as it is produced here with minimal overhead cost like transportation.Clearly our Gouvernment and their taxes sing to the pirate tune of ” honesty among thieves”..até já Mig

    1. I don’t think it’s got a lot to do with the Government except of course for their taxes. It’s just a very well run marketing exercise. I’ve been visiting the island since the late 70s and it’s only the last 20 years it has been pushed more and more to the front. Certainly prior to the millennium I didn’t come across Rum Tours. There are a couple of companies who have been around for a long time but most rum making was very small time. Nothing like the French Cognac industry.
      Maurice you’ve been coming a long time, can you add anything?

  3. Well rum only can survive if the farmers continue producing sugar cane and many of them are finding difficult to continue with the production and finding work force to harvest the sugar cane that what is causing continue with the production of sugar cane

  4. Sugar cane production in Madeira is difficult, because of the terrain it’s very labour intensive. Like Lincolnshire and Kent in the UK, sorry Daniel, but locals don’t want to do it. That same terrain means you can’t throw up a dozen factory estates to fill with workers producing, at low cost, items to export. All the more reason to concentrate on responsible Tourism. Here Madeirans are loathe to work in the Hospitality Industry resulting in immigrants filling the industry. I have seen in the last week, that some of these immigrants have different attitudes to Madeiran thinking that is causing animosity between them.

    Despite the terrain being difficult and despite the help from the government the many problem is that many farmers decide not to produce anymore and many and also many died and the next generation isn’t interested in produce and the biggest problem is the lack of workforce in planting and looking after of the sugar cane .
