New Entry rules from November

  1. With a trip to Madeira not long afterwards, I am keeping my fingers crossed that the airport arrangements can be introduced as efficiently as all the covid tests and checking were. Additionally, they have rather more planning time than for covid.

  3. The process at Madeira airport with the current system is very time consuming, especially on Mondays when many British travellers arrive and leave. The queue at the passport gate to leave is currently often longer than 1 hour meaning you need to go straight to the passport control ready to board your flight. The advice is to skip buying in duty-free or any of the food outlets and go straight to departures. The next stage is looking as though it will be worse – crazy when all UK passports now have electronic photographs and other biometrics already coded in.

  4. The real question is why should Madeira admit any Brits at all. They have minimal benefit. They wander the streets looking desperately for Fever Tree tonic and pubs that have live coverage of obscure 2nd Division football matches where Crewe is guaranteed a win. Seriously, your points are well made. Unless I am missing something, the chaos will be worse for Canadians (and our American cousins) that travel to Madeira via a connecting flight in Ponta Delgada in the Azores as the point of entry with an hour connection time. Let us wait and see.

    1. Without the brits, the Madeira economy will crumble, as we are the biggest contributors to the island. You Canadian and your American cousins, what do you have to offer apart from talking loudly full of rubbish and so full of yourself you just came along if you don’t like it? Leave?

      1. Hi Maurice. I admit that I come from The Colonies where polar bears devour Scotsmen for their morning snack. BTW (which is how the young kids say “By the way”), a group of my Canadian friends has recently put in a rezoning application to turn the Zona Velha into an ice hockey arena. Just mentioning…

    3. Excuse me, Stewart, but I cannot believe what I’ve read from you. How dare you group all us British Citizens into the same Category. Personally, I have my Gin & Fever Tree Tonic in my five star hotel, certainly not wandering the streets. On my last visit, Funchal had certainly not lowered its standards, although with Americans visiting, well, I daren’t go any further. Think twice, you’re talking about beautiful Madeira not the Balearics.

      1. Lovely response. Thank goodness some of our former Colonial Masters still have a sense of humour! (Please note the proper spelling of the word “humour”.) Other responses were distinctly cranky which seems to be the prevailing mood of the Brits these days.

  5. Just to add that if you have a residence permit you should be exempt. However, there is presently some question as to which immigration queue residents should use – currently non-EU residents can’t use the EU passport lane, but they can’t use the non-EU EES lanes either unless there’s some procedure for skipping the checks. Sounds like arrivals in November could be interesting.

  6. After 50 years of working in Heavy Industry my fingers have hardly have any prints. I can’t use an ipad as it asks for a print. So how will this affect me? Any serious response would be grateful.

    1. Travellers without fingers or without fingerprints are always excluded from the requirement of taking fingerprints, but as long as one fingerprint can be obtained, the right hand should be used. However, where the physical impossibility is of a temporary nature, that fact SHALL be recorded in the EES and the person SHALL be required to give fingerprints on exit or at the subsequent entry.

      Within the standard process fingerprint data from the right hand (4 fingers flat, slap) SHALL be captured where present. Otherwise, the corresponding fingerprint data from the left hand (4 fingers flat, slap) SHALL be acquired. In a supervised setting (such as MBC and Mobile Systems), if the traveller is not physically capable of placing all 4 fingers on the fingerprint scanner at the same time to achieve a good quality image, the border guard MAY capture each finger of the slap in single finger capture mode. This SHALL be possible during the entire process. If fingerprints are captured singly or on single finger readers e.g. on a Mobile System, a uniqueness check of all fingerprints captured MUST be performed.

  7. It will be utter bedlam, especially once the ‘entitled’ set decide they should use the EU passport line because the queue is shorter and their twelve ferral children have ADHD and don’t believe in queuing., thereby holding everything up for EU passport holders too.
