The man who died this afternoon in the sea off Porto Santo, in the Porto dos Frades (Barbinha) area, is a tourist, of Polish nationality, and was at the beach in that area with a group of friends.
As far as it was possible to ascertain, the foreigner was swept away by the strong current and ended up dying.
The body of the man, a tourist aged around 55, was spotted by a couple on land, who alerted 112.
Following the alert received at 3:36 pm, through the Funchal Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Subcenter (MRSC Funchal), reporting a body floating in the water, crew members from the Porto Santo Lifeguard Station, members of the Porto Santo Maritime Police Local Command and the Porto Santo Volunteer Firefighters immediately went to the location.
Upon arrival at the scene, the vessel’s crew removed the body from the water and took it to the Porto Santo marina.
The Maritime Police Psychology Office has been activated, the National Maritime Authority reported.
