Police fine taxi drivers next to Funchal cable car

The Public Security Police were this morning fining some taxi drivers for abusive parking near the Funchal cable car.

As it turned out, several taxi drivers have been picking up customers outside the taxi rank, breaking the law.

According to one testimony, there are taxi drivers even entering the Almirante Reis parking lot to get customers. A situation that has left PSP aware.

  1. Are taxis only allowed to pick-up on authorised cab ranks? As they are, in theory, metered I would have thought that you could flag a passing cab down. Must admit, have always taken them from cab ranks.

    In the UK you can flag a ‘taxi’ down anywhere in the street. Whereas mini-cabs have to be booked on the phone or now with an app such as Uber.

    1. I’m not to sure on this. I can’t see why you can’t flag a taxi down if it’s empty, you would let it pass and look for a cab rank.

  2. Yes, you can flag down a taxi anywhere in the street. That´s not the problem reported in the news article. They are being fined because not only they are parked and queing as a rank (a different case than a taxi passing by and being flagged down), they are also doing it in parking spaces which are for residents permit only.

    2. As Tobi says, Funchal is the most expensive but other areas will be cheaper. It will depend on the period of time of rental, the size of property required e.g. number of bedrooms needed, parking space needed, swimming pool etc etc.

      Before you dive in you need to consider the above and if you opt for a smaller conurbation say, Ponta do Sol or maybe the north coast then how are you going to get around for shops etc. Once you have got a plan there are several agencies on the island who can help.

  4. Dude , you confused me , Madeira do Not have a cable car , what you’re talking about is a Gondola , the cable car do not move overhead supported and pulled by a cable
    If you want to see or use a cable car , I’m afraid that you will have to go to San Francisco

    2. In San Francisco they have streetcars also called trams or cable-car as they are hauled by a cable. In Europe cable cars are the aerial ones as in Madeira, 1 in London, numerous ones in Austria, Switzerland etc. They can have small 4 person gondola on a continuous loop as in Funchal or like the one in Gibralter two large gondola which go backwards and forwards. In the mountains of New England they have these and they call them tramways! Where most people think of tramway as being vehicle on railway type tracks.

      It is all a matter of semantics. Different types of cable cars and different languages. So as Tobi said, Madeira does have cable cars(I.e. cars on a cable) known as Teleferico in Portuguese.

  5. Hi Brian , after selling my home in Madeira ( far too big ) , I decided to rent in the centre of Funchal . I have a 1 bed apartment with lift and balcony . Modern building .
    I pay 540 euro a month , this includes gas , water and electricity. The only other cost is cable tv and internet .
    I found it locally online.
