  1. Thanks for the regular updates Tobi. Keep up the great work Good to see our Jet2 flight on Saturday looks to be OK. Shame ro be leaving the lovely Madeira but also a relief to be going home given the current situation.

  3. Tobi. We want to say a massive thanks to you for all your fantastic efforts to keep us informed over the past week.
    We are now back home in the UK but facing a trip to Bristol tomorrow to collect our car as we had to fly BA to Gatwick today rather than Bristol on weds.

    I thought I would post our experience in case others are in the same situation.

    On Monday I happened to check the Easyjet app and realised our flight was cancelled. There were no earlier flights than 2 April and nothing a our rescue flights at that stage.

    This seemed to be far off and with the likely escalations that are now indeed in place we decided to book and alternative earlier flight with BA to LGW today.

    Once the rescue flights were announced we attempted to change our Easyjet booking and could not as no flights were showing as available. We think this was because we had changed our flight from the original. There was no way to amend either via the App or the website.

    If there are others in the same situation it appears that the only option with Easyjet is to go to the airport.

    We found everyone on Madeira very gentle and hospitable and all that has happened will not prevent us from wanting to return.

  4. Interesting, the ANA website shows BA2780 & BA2781 operating plus various other flights but when I check Airportia it only shows a limited number of flights in and out:-

    I am wondering which one is correct.

    We are booked to come out in June on BA2780 and if BA cancel we will get a full refund. If the flight operates and we do not turn up we lose the money but, if we fly we end up locked up in an apartment for the two weeks which defeats the object of going there. Talk about between a rock and a hard place!

    1. Have just checked the BTW departure board and it shows BA2780 as gate open! So, anyone thinking they are coming for a 7 day holiday are in for a bit of a shock! Having to spend 14 days in isolation, missing their return flight and paying for a second week in the hotel.

      Which begs the question, why is the airline taking people when fully aware of the situation?

  5. To be honest Maurice , whether your flight in June is operating or not , I think you and your wife should stay at home . This virus will be around for a long time and I don’t see the point of risking going to a London airport to travel . Maybe consider changing your flight to a later date? We may not see eye to eye at times but I genuinely wouldn’t want you taking unnecessary risks .

    1. Watching the situation daily. Travel insurance has expired so can’t claim on that. Will have to wait and see. Hopefully BA will cancel and we’ll get our fares back. The deposit we paid on the apartment can be held over til we can get there.

  6. First of all, thank you for your blog Tobi, it has been an absolute lifeline.
    We have been in Madeira a month, due to fly home with BA on the 26th. BA emailed us last Monday to confirm the flight still stands but they will contact us if anything changes. Advice overnight from the FCO is to make plans to return home as soon as possible. Our lovely AirBnb host is getting worried, I think for both us and herself should we be forced to stay here. Obviously concerned that she would be doing wrong by continuing to rent to us.
    I spent much of last night trying to get through to BA and do not feel reassured after speaking to them. My take on BA is that they are trying to fill any available seats on imminent flights at extortionate prices and will then use third parties to fly anyone else home, which means going via Lisbon, Amsterdam etc and possibly waiting hours for a hoped for connecting flight. Am I just an old synic?
    We have to make the decision asap to pay BA hundreds of pounds extra or take our chances.
