MADEIRA ‘ESCAPES’ THE DUST OF THE SAHARA

Madeira should not be affected by dust from the Sahara, scheduled for Tuesday, for the Iberian Peninsula.

Victor Prior who is responsible in the Region for the Meteorological Observatory warns of the dry air that will be felt in the coming days, especially in the mountainous areas of Madeira. The Iberian Peninsula is expected to be hit on Tuesday by dust from the Sahara desert.

In a note published on the official website, the IPMA said that the dust will cross the Atlantic Ocean and reach the Caribbean, due to the influence of trade winds and the Azorean anticyclone, and considered the event “particularly intense”, with the forecast of a high concentration of particles in the air in Puerto Rico, the Dominican Republic and Haiti.

“These dusts are expected to reach the Iberian Peninsula next Tuesday, with the IPMA monitoring the situation”, added the organism, highlighting the positive effects of this phenomenon: “These dusts, rich in minerals and nutrients, eventually settle in the ocean and on land, thus constituting an important natural fertilization mechanism ”.

The passage of dust through Portugal and Spain is also associated with a mass of heat from North Africa that will affect the Iberian Peninsula earlier this week. Moreover, the IPMA issued a yellow warning even on Saturday to eight districts in the interior of mainland Portugal due to the forecast of high temperatures.
