NEW POSITIVE CASE OF COVID-19 IN MADEIRA

According to the epidemiological bulletin published today by DGS, the Region has a new case of covid-19, accounting for a total of 92 cases since the beginning of the pandemic.

It is recalled that, yesterday, according to IASAÚDE, the Region had two positive cases of active covid-19 and a suspect that had been detected on arrival at Madeira Airport.

  1. This is definitely not the news we want to hear. Is this the start of a second spike of cases on the island. There is no doubt that we will be hearing more of this when tourism starts back up again. I just hope that the government will act quickly if the problems gets out of hand again just like they did the first time around. Stay safe Madeira.

  2. Two new cases after 40 days is hardly a spike but it does highlight the virtually impossible task of keeping the island virus free if there is any contact with the outside world. Either a vaccine is found or we just have to live with it. The alternative wouldn’t be worth contemplating.

  4. Passengers dont have to test anymore before boarding a plane since they started the “on Arrival” testing.
    Now there are infected persons on every other plane spreading the virus.

  5. Friedl I agree. Testing on arrival is madness. All those people on the plane who could now potentially be infected. Travelling abroad is an absolute no no for us unless they virus is completely eradicated and/or there’s a vaccine (which I am hopeful about.)

    1. If people comply with the rules on board, the risk of contamination is very low. The air is renewed every few minutes and this virus does not spread by breading the same air other do.

      A few infected persons have arrived in the island up to the moment and no one else on the flight was contaminated. This is because, among other thing, masks are compulsory in domestic flight. However, reading some frequent comments here, I can see for some reason wearing a mask in UK is a huge problem. So, if UK airlines do not make it compulsory, for sure flight from UK will be a much bigger problem than from anywhere else where these simple rules apply.

  6. For travel to many countries a Visa is essential so why not make a covid test essential BEFORE travel sure a cost is involved but it has to be. If I go back to the UK at the moment I have to quarantine at my expense here, it seems that the government pays, why?

    1. The Madeiran government can’t make people take covid tests legally before travelling unfortunately, that’s why they’re setting up the capabilities to do it here and even paying for it themselves (or rather the Madeiran people are paying for the tests)

  7. Madeira asks that you have a test 3 days before you fly, why wouldn’t you….oh that’s right, can’t be bothered, if you haven’t had a test they test you anyway at the airport when you arrive! Stay safe Madeira ❤️

  9. Can I just clarify that masks are now mandatory on any kind of public transport including airplanes in the U.K.

  10. For Madeira I think it is much better to test everyone on arrival. My understanding is that the government will be using a tracking app with the testing so if someone test positive everyone who has contact with the person can be contacted for a test. If on the other hand someone has a test 3 days before they arrive they will not be tested at the airport but there is no guarantee that the person has not come in contact with someone and is now contagious. Test everyone who enters and within 12 hours you will have the test results and if anyone test positive check the contacts they have made in the 12 hours and test them also. As I see it this is the only way to see what might be entering the Island and preventing the spread of the disease.

    1. There are prons and cons in each case (testing at departure or testing at arrival) and it is not obvious which one is better. But you mention a very important detail: traceability. Not possible to put risk down to zero but things can be controlled if eventually people who have been in contact with people who eventually were tested positive can be traced.
