Negative temperature in Pico do Areeiro

For the first time this year – and also this winter – Madeira records negative temperatures today. This occurs at the highest meteorological station in the IPMA network in the Madeira Archipelago, that is, in Pico do Areeiro, where the extreme value of the minimum temperature (up to 9 am) was -0.5 degrees Celsius (°C ) recorded between 5 and 6 am this Friday, January 19th.

The surface air temperature at this station, located at an altitude of 1,799 meters and located in the Municipality of Santana, has recorded negative values ​​since mid-morning (-0.2ºC/5 hours; -0.5ºC/6h; -0.1ºC/ 7h; -0.4ºC/8h; -0.4ºC/9h).

In addition to the low temperatures, there has also been some/little precipitation, especially in the last hour (1.6 mm), conditions that increase the likelihood of snow/hail.

Possibility of snow that is not included in the forecast from the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA) regarding the weather in Madeira.
