Coronavirus: Portugal not added to England quarantine list despite rise in coronavirus cases

Portugal will not be put back on the quarantine list in England today.

There was wide speculation it would after the number of COVID-19 cases in Portugal rose to 23 per 100,000 people in the seven days up to Wednesday – up from 15.3 a week earlier.

The UK government generally says countries where the figure is higher than 20 per 100,000 are at risk of being added to the list.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps tweeted: “We continue to keep the Travel Corridor list under constant review & won’t hesitate to remove countries if needed. However, there are no English additions or removals today. Nonetheless, holidaymakers are reminded – 14-day quarantine countries can & do change at very short notice.”

Holidaymakers in Portugal were scrambling to get home this week.

  1. I checked gov.uk a short while back and there have been no changes.

    On a separate point, does anyone know the law regarding CBD oil in Portugal?

  2. Thank goodness although it’s worrying that Portugal cases are rising. Let’s hope it’s a blip. Interesting that in Wales people flying in from mainland Portugal will have to self isolate but those Madeira and the Azores will not. What a shame the English government didn’t do it that months ago. We are arriving in Funchal and really looking forward to it.

  3. In Funchal at present, and it’s quite sad to see the number of hotels and restaurants that are closed. Compared to other parts infections in Madeira seem relatively low, and compared to UK the locals are more observant about wearing a mask. Let’s hope there is no return to a ban on travel.

  4. It seems the useless Scottish so called Government have added Portugal to the list. As yet I don’t know if that includes Madeira and Azores.
    I doubt she who must be obeyed will make exemptions.?

  5. Given our UK government seems incompetent at most things this year. And the devolved governments seem determined to be different. Asserting themselves from England. Scotland has now quarantined returners from Greece. The rest of the UK has not. So watch this space for Portugal and the islands.

  6. It seems as if Mainland Portugal has been added to the Wales list, not the Islands.

    If Portugal is added back to the list in the coming days, let’s hope that the UK Government are sensible in the same way.

  7. As I suspected, our Fuhrer has decided, as usual, that Scotland has to be different, and we will have to self-isolate on return from Madeira. This is the woman who will not even lock down Glasgow (where most of our cases are) because that is SNP heartland…
    Disgusted.

  8. It is confusing as some reports for Wales state Quarantine for MAINLAND Portugal!!
    So does it apply to Azores and Madeira?
    wales also says isolation necessary on returning from some Greek islands!!

  9. Just hoping UK government will see sense and not lump Madeira in with the rest of Portugal. On another note – really annoyed as Easy JET have cancelled our early morning flight on Monday 19th October BUT if you book with Easy JET holidays it is possible to fly on on 19th October on the Easy JET afternoon flight. Outrageous and we will be putting in a massive complaint to Easy JET.

  10. Hi Alison,
    Jet2 did exactly the same to us last March coming home from Madeira. They left us stranded on the Island and gave preference to their Jet2 holidays customers. In the end it’s all down to £££. Good luck with your complaint but knowing EasyJet I’ve a feeling it will fall on deaf ears. I’m sure I’m right when I say flight only passengers are not protected by ATOL whereas the holidays passengers are. By the way, what excuse did they give you?

  11. Hi Maurice, cbd oil is sold in many shops here, I’m assuming it’s the same on the mainland but I’m not sure
