SIX NEW POSITIVE CASES OF COVID-19 AND 16 UNDER STUDY

Today there are six new positive cases to report, so RAM now counts 263 confirmed cases of covid-19. These are six imported cases, two from Venezuela, two from Poland, one from France and one from Lisbon and the Tagus Valley.

The IASAÚDE balance sheet also points out two new recovered cases and 16 new situations that are currently being studied by health authorities, all identified in the screening operation implemented at Madeira airport. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

  1. First there was the odd one or two, now it’s becoming a more regular 6 cases per day. Had these 6 candidates been tested before they boarded the plane/s. if not, WHY NOT?

    1. What difference would it make it can take up to a couple of weeks to show positive. We need tourists, at least we don’t have many cases and have been testing since July, so in just over 3 months it’s hardly anything.

      1. The difference would be minus 6, viz six people who probably would have stayed away had they known they are covid-19 positive, unless of course they are irresponsible, which should be punishable and all expenses should be recovered from the source countries.

        1. I know at least one person who tested negative before leaving the UK, the test was just short od the 72 hours so had the test on arrival here and tested postive. Madeira is doing a great job and we need all the tourism back, and it really makes no difference where they get tested. The low cases we have shows our system is working and working very well. Thousands of people are arriving each day so the cases are next to nothing.

Yes we do need the tourists but …t’s very naive to say we don’t have many cases because the cases growing more and more every day, on July 1th we had 2 cases now, 3 months later, we have 87 all brought here by the tourists. If this continues we’ll soon be back to where we came from. It’s no longer a health issue but an economic issue, it doesn’t matter anymore if people get infected, the Gov. is willing to take the risk. On top of that the government has spend more than E 900.000 on tests for tourists, the tourists love this because at home they have to pay E 200 so they take the risk, who cares, test for free and if possitive, 2 wks or longer for free in a hotel. Why not let tourists pay at least 50% for the test so they’ll think twice before they travel. Anyway by the end of the year we’ll be back to the situation between March and July.

Yes and they are all in quarantine and there is hardly and spread locally, I agree the tourist the at test positive should be made to pay for the hotel this will help a lot, but it’s time yo get back to some kind of normal, and get money coming in, as this will kill more than this stupid virus.

      1. Tobi, I will be arriving on Monday for the third time since the middle of August, I know at least four Restaurants that are going to welcome me with open arms. In each Restaurant I’m going to be spending around 40 Euros a night. I wish I could visit more Restaurants but you can only eat so much. They and I wish there were many more like me. The way testing is being carried out encourages visitors to visit, support and enjoy the Island, in turn Madeira will prosper. Knowing if I was to test positive at the airport, I would then have to pay, I assume the going rate, to stay in a Government run hotel room until virus free, I’m afraid you would lose not only my custom but the majority of your tourists. It seems that non local residents, not just from the UK, who because of a regular income, see this only as a health issue, it is not. Let them ask theirselves, how would I react if my income was reduced to prevent visitors and keep the Island virus free ?

        1. Very true, only if you are positive you go to a hotel, but you don’t pay, its not a nice experience and the food is basic, but you can order takeaways and still help locally.

  4. Louise, in the UK unless you have symptoms you can not get a NHS test, you can have a private test but not easy as most Lab facilities are busy doing Government tests. If you have symptoms you are not likely to come to Madeira knowing you will be tested at the airport and sent to stop in a hotel room for two weeks, even if the Government pay. Yes it is an economic problem, very real, to any local employed in the Hospitality Industry. I would be interested if you could tell us how you would solve the problem of, no tourists, no profits, no profits, no wages, no wages, no tax revenue, no tax revenue, no facilities, no wages, no food. Perhaps you haven’t this problem, most of the locals have.

  6. You all miss one vital aspect and that is how you are treated if you get a really bad reaction to this virus, your all going on about hotel stays for free, what if your insurance has the exclusion clause.
    Try and line up the 72 hours before flying need, its a nightmare.
    Get real and learn to live with this mess or shut yourself away.

    1. And the hotel stay is not fun if positive, your in your room, and the food is a bit like hospital food. Not sure if they still supply the food or if the hotel do this now.

  7. And don’t forget that health facilitiea are limited on the island and needed very much for our own population with other health issues than Covid-19.

  8. We arrived last night & have to highly commend the very efficient handling of entry. We had a private test 60 hours before departing the UK (our negative results only took 7.5 hours to come though) & it was a well spent £99 per person for our own peace of mind as so many people are asymptomatic. We wanted to have our holiday in lovely Madeira- our 3rd visit – and plan to visit a number of restaurants & support where we can. So far everything the hotel has put in place makes us feel safer than back in the UK.

  9. That’s it folks go onto a positive agenda, and start to live again, we arrive Friday for an indefinite period and hope to do as much as possible to support the island economy and our friends.
