A new record of 110 cases in Madeira

Today Madeira records over 110 cases of covid-19, a new daily maximum of contagions.

These are 14 imported cases (3 from the United Kingdom, 3 from the Lisbon and Tagus Valley Region, 2 from the North of Portugal, 2 from Poland, 2 from South Africa, 1 from Spain and 1 from Nigeria) and 96 cases of local transmission, most of them already associated with contacts or contexts of positive cases.

According to the bulletin released by the Regional Health Directorate, today there are also 31 more recovered cases to report (now counts 1,218 recovered cases).

There are now 876 active cases, of which 175 are imported and 701 are locally transmitted.

  1. Hope the 2 from South Africa aren’t their new strain. The new one here in the UK is bad enough. Take care everyone and stay safe ❤️ ? ❤️

    3. As far as I know there are no direct flights from Nigeria therefore could the imported figures refer to passport holders and not the flight they came in on. ???

  3. I am afraid it is the same all over Europe concerning the second wave: The reaction when numbers are rising is too lame. The 7 day incidence of the local transmission cases is above 180 now (means that within 7 days more than 180 persons out of 100.000 Madeirans got infected by Covid-19). One week ago it was 92, to weeks ago 53, in the beginning of December it was 36. What a horrible development! It seems like governments are afraid of measures or dreaming of available vaccin for everyone within a few weeks.
    Are we residents on the list to be vaccinated as well?

    1. The incidence relates to testing. More testing, larger incidence. No testing, zero incidence. The number of hospitalized people shows that Madeira has a low inpatients/active cases ratio which means a lot of testing.

  5. Madeira needs to shut up its borders and stop tourists from bringing in the new COvid variants. The solution is too late for now but it’s the wisest thing to do. As an island, Madeira, like Australia and New Zealand, had a wonderful advantage to control this awful virus but I guess the economic reliability on tourism was too great and the fatalities are indicative of a country which is not responding in an ethical manner of just trying to save lives, especially in regards of our elderly.
    I am so saddened by this COvid death information and as the daughter of now deceased parents from Madeira, I feel a sense of despair for the population that remains there like sitting ducks , all because the local government from Funchal are ignorant and selfish and clearly don’t care about the physical welfare of its citizens.

  6. At last. The UK government has stopped waffling and gone for a real Lockdown from midnight tonight. The Tier system did not work because of the new strain and its transmission speed. But nothing works if so many selfishly ignore restrictions and mingle. As has happened in the UK. And will happen anywhere else . The virus loves crowds !

    There can be little excuse now in the UK . The rules are clear. It is sad that the Madeiran government appears to have allowed returners/ visitors to keep importing the virus. Along with too many options to mix amongst the resident population.

    Thank heavens for Oxford Astra Zeneca. Looking forward to a speedy and efficient programme for the whole of the UK. NHS staff and care home residents and carers deservedly first.

    The mind boggles at some behaviours by some people , one sees daily on the news in the UK !

  7. … The UK is Not in Real Lockdown (only in name)?? ,, people still moving around, shopping, public transport etc etc ,, Real Lockdown is nigh on impossible in modern societies ,, only possible if we all lived a self subsisting existence ,, it will lower the spread but if people are still moving around then so will the virus …

  8. The situation in Europe is now becoming increasingly worrying. My fear is that the new variant will become so bad that the vaccines will not work.

    I don’t know what Madeira fines are for breaking Covid rules are, but everyone should be fined a serious amount of money that would make people think twice about risking breaking restrictions. In Scotland the first fine is £30 with repeated offences going up to £960

  9. How are you still getting cases in from the UK when we cannot leave the country? Didn’t you refuse access to Brits on a British Airways plane last week?

  10. yes, panic is all what is needed to promote the vaccines. Has anybody looked into the annual reports of vaccine manufacturers? In the case of Portugal, the Biontech experimental vaccine or gene therapy, marketed by Pfizer is going to be used. On the 1st of January Portugal took over the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union from Berlin. The EU and Portugal are now pushing the vaccine.     1. Thank you Max, great info. Toby by translating only the mainstream media info regarding the cov19 has changed his website into another fear mongering medium. Hopefully we will see other articles regarding the virus. He can translate local news about events and the weather, but this subject should not be left with one sided opinion, on an independent blog.

  12. Having recently returned from a holiday in Madeira I was dismayed to see many people walking in the streets unmasked. Most of them appeared to be tourists and I thought this very disrespectful towards the people of the island. I don’t know what powers the police have re flouting of COVID-19 measures but I saw one officer listening to music on his mobile phone – can’t think this was part of his job description!
    The government of Madeira have been commendable in testing every visitor to the island but there wasn’t any checking of tourists once they left the airport in respect of the fact we could have traveled anywhere on the island from the time of testing to receiving the results.. This is a serious flaw in the testing procedure in my opinion and may be a factor in the spreading of the virus.
