MADEIRA WITH THE THIRD HIGHEST INCREASE IN REGISTERED UNEMPLOYMENT

Registered unemployment grew 31.3% in December compared to 2019, reaching 20,116 unemployed people in the month of Christmas, which represents an increase of 367 more unemployed compared to November and of 4,792 more compared to the same month last year.

At the regional level, in December 2020, registered unemployment increased in all regions of the country. Of the year-on-year increases, the most pronounced occurred in the Algarve region (+ 60.8%), followed by Lisbon and Vale do Tagus (+ 41.1%) and the Madeira region with + 31.3%.

According to the Employment and Vocational Training Institute (IEFP), at the end of December 2020, 402 254 unemployed individuals were registered in the Employment Services of the Mainland and Autonomous Regions, a number that represents 69.0% of a total of 582 926 job applications.
