Rough seas destroy walkway and restaurants at Praia Formosa

The rough seas which are due to last untill midnight tonight with a yellow warning in place, made thenselves known during the early hours of this morning at Praia Formosa.

The sea has destroyed many of the already struggling restaurants along that area.

Thanks to Sajjad Khan owner of Indian Palace who sent me these photos below while taking his morning exercise.

It is sad that damage has been caused to the restaurants but that is the chance you take when you choose a site, if it’s near water you benefit from visitors wanting eat to the smell of the sea and sounds of the waves, if you want something with a vista based on height expect wind and snow, these things should be factored in. Whilst it looks muddy, I would challenge the term that the restaurants have been destroyed, just a poor choice of language.
    Someone I know has been flooded by the river for the third time in a year, this time up to 1.5m deep, they consider it a price worth paying for the paradise they enjoy the rest of the time, half an hour’s hosing down and it’s as good as new.

  2. One wonders if, on an obviously vulnerable stretch of coast, these joints ever received planning permission, if indeed they needed it in the first place ?
    Often wondered why that quite large, flat stretch of land (a rare thing in Madeira) has remained undeveloped.
    Think we have the answer…

  3. The car park area that was blocked off and some of the surrounding land is owned by a Welsh family. I believe that a couple of restaurants are on the land . I can’t remember what happened to make the owners block the car park suddenly in the early hours of one morning .
    It certainly came as a shock to the people who visited the beach. I’m sure someone else may remember.

  4. I would not call some tables and chairs dragged to the side by sea water a destroyed restaurant…

  5. Madeira has endured its fair share of problems over the past few years, but always makes a comeback.

When I went for walk this morning this what I saw walk way path was broken by waves lot of stones in the restaurants and bar areas some tables and chairs were damaged but good thing was restaurants owners and staff were already cleaning the area and preparing for opening this was a positive side but other hand no police presence or any safety restriction by authorities as many people were still crossing the broken bridge and going across the dangerous area I hope every thing goes well and all the hardworking people will make it work again as soon as possible so we can have our usual coffe again in the morning in Praia formosa
