  2. This reduction is being achieved without further lockdown measures. Instead of countries like Germany and UK banning flights to other countries and regions based on random incidence rates thresholds they really should try to find a balance to fix medium/light restrictions throughout time, keep the economy open, keep people´s rights as much as possible, and keep the infection numbers sufficiently low to health services work normally. I am told by friends in Germany that this constant slight open-up and shutdown based on incidence rates is quite depressing and they just want to get out of there as soon as possible because they always know that after a lockdown comes a slight open-up of economy only to last a few weeks and a lockdown comes in again.

    1. A very fair description. In the UK we have a lockdown but we are allowed to travel into town and buy essentials. I favour the Madeira curfew. You have to be home by 6.00 but for 12 hours of the day your life is something near normal. You shop, you eat, you are able to meet and converse. In the UK, you travel into town to buy your food, you meet nobody, there is no where open to meet. After 6.00 the streets are deserted because of this. I have had 6 adult conversations of more than five minutes in a month.

      1. Yes we have had a pretty good life, but of course so many people are not making money and just getting further in debt. Let’s see how things go in the UK as they start relaxing lockdown step by step. I believe there will be an announcement on April 12th, as to when peopke can start to travel, but it looks like this will be later than the date of 17th May.

        1. Health versus commerce, it’s a very fine line to straddle. I applaud Madeira for what it has done. I have flights booked for July 1, that’s the easy bit. Will the UK insist citizens back from Madeira must self isolate, will the Madeiran Government lift the curfew ? The two key questions that will decide whether people return to Madeira this summer. A further help from the Madeiran Government would be to insist on a 72 hour prior to arrival test or a test on arrival.

          1. The curfew will most likely be lifted on the coming weeks but only where there is a clear view on the “Easter effect” in infections rate. My guess is that on the 3rd week of April the curfew will be lifted.

  3. The quoted incidence rate of 50 = less than 20 people per day for a week. Is this figure, 20, the number we were using last year when the UK Government brought in the first ban on flights to Madeira ? I seem to remember this was some time in May ?

  4. @Antonio Lamas: I am in 100% agreement. Our German government should learn from Madeira how to bring the incidence rate down. And in Madeira I think you also have predominantly the aggressive B117 version. Congrats to the people on Madeira. Well done so far !!!
