Madeira hopes to return to the Green list

Secretary of Tourism, Eduardo Jesus, awaits the response of the British Government to the various contacts that have been made since yesterday, and asks for scientific rigor taking into account the current numbers of the pandemic in Madeira.

Everyone has expressed their great disappointment to the Government of the UK removing Portugal from the green list, and not treating the islands separately to the mainland.

  1. We were discussing this last night and can only think that maybe they are worried about people travelling from mainland Portugal taking variants of the virus to Madeira and the Azores.

I hope that Madeira is put back on the green list I live in North Wales and would feel safer visiting Madeira than some of the towns over the border in North West England which have some of the highest infection rates in the UK. The first minister of our Welsh assembly has stated that we are under a great threat of infection being brought into our part of Wales from these areas.
    I wish you all well in Madeira and hope the British government use some common sense ????????????????

  4. If the Madeira & Azores are treated separately, then that would have a knock on effect for all the islands in Spain, Italy and Greece. Treating the individual autonomous islands separately would be an nightmare.

    2. There is talk that some Greek islands have vaccinated virtually their entire populations and will soon be added to the Green list along with Malta and possibly the Canaries. Madeira is likely to follow.

      The people who made this decision had the best intentions but we all know the saying “The road to Hell is paved with good intentions”. They need to shown an atlas and the infection rate for the island.

  5. I knew when they had all the football at Porto, that this would happen two weeks later. People must wear masks and keep 2 metres distanced. It is not difficult but it seems people wearing masks forget to distance. We came to Madeira on Wednesday by private jet. Persons interested in joining us in future leaving from Edinburgh should contact me as considerable saving if several people commit!

    2. The increase in virus numbers has been in Lisbon, the match held in Porto, between two English teams so the supporters would have been British. I thought the Portuguese would have had more sense than to host the match.

    4. Hi Anna I may possibly be interested in future flights providing cost not too prohibitive. Recently retired and would love to treat myself to trip on private plane if dates coincide.

  6. If the British Parliament rode roughshod over the devolved elected Assemblies of Scotland and Wales, there would be widespread condemnation. And yet, here they are ignoring Madeira’s safe status & it’s independent Covid-19 immigration rules. Hypocritical in the extreme.

  7. In reply to Elizabeth, Madeira and the Azores were already treated differently to mainland Portugal based on vaccination evidence taking the place of a PCR test. So perfectly possible to treat islands separately I would think.

  8. Its people using the islands as a stepping stone that is likely to be the problem.
    But yes unfair after all the hard work this island as put in to test people, give them fast results and put people into right place if test was positive.
    I congratulate them big time for it.

  9. Asking for scientific rigour from the current UK government is the definition of whistling in the wind.
