Lidl coming to Madeira

Regional Government admits contacts and applauds the investment, all has been approved. ???

The Lidl supermarket chain has practically everything set up to open the first supermarket in Funchal.

The store could well go where Aki (Leroy Merlin) is at the moment, as this will soon close when the new place is finished in São Martinho..

  2. Hi Tobi. Just read your blog about Aki closing. Didn’t even know there was a Leroy Merlin in Funchal which was music to my ears. We live in France and are familiar with the store which is great. We are about to start renovating a small house in Funchal and are over in 3 weeks time. Do you know if the store will still be open then. Or do you know of any similar stores where we can get products. Only know of conforama. Thanks. Lynn

    1. Hi, Aki is all part of Leroy Merlin, so it will just move to the huge complex in São Martinho, and the one on the way to Madeira Shopping will close. The new one is due to open very soon I believe. If you come off the São Martinho exit, and go straight down through the tunnel it’s right there in front.

  3. The new huge Leroy Merlin is due to open at the end of September. The current Aki store is running down its stocks so looks desolate. It will be ideal for Lynne (previous post) as the new store should open when she arrives in Madeira.

  4. Lynne, go to Casa Santo Antonio, better price and more choice of DIY products.
    Branches at Funchal, pilar and rd to Camacha all with different range of products.

  5. Traffic already bad at AKI area, Lidl will make the problem even worse.
    Crazy, better in an area with good road structure to prevent congestion.

    1. Competition is good for driving progressive business. Madeira will not move on if it continues to stagnate.

  7. I live in the town of Kidderminster, always good for a disparaging laugh in TV sit-coms, once the carpet manufacturing centre of the world, now down to two small factories. Stourport literally next dooor, total population of 70,000 plus. We have two large Co-op’s , two huge Tesco’s, a Morrisons, a Sainsburys, an Asda, a Lidls, two Aldis, two Pound Shops, plus the odd Iceland and Farm Foods premises. Each will be packed on a Sunday morning by people who’s back ends are described as spreading over two Post Codes. If competition pays then Kidderminster must be a gold mine.

  8. Competition is good, I lived in eastern Europe and saw the introduction of many supermarkets both DIY and food.
    Lidle was introduced and gave a alternative choice, although I like Lidle in UK and did my shop there. In EU I continued to shop with the equivalent Pingo for the bulk of my shop who I like very much and were cheaper on the main shop.
    Pingo I feel have plenty of flexibility left in their prices, especially in vegetables which I think are over priced compared to other outlets.

  9. It is good that is Lidil instead of Aldi .I don’t understand the Aldi in Portugal their isn’t anything in the shop and it is complete different from the UK that I know that was a good range of products shame the Aldi didn’t brought some of that products range to Portugal .

  10. I loved Aldi and Lidl when we lived in Germany 20years ago . The UK version is different, I assume, to cater for different tastes . The madame glamour perfume around £3.99 is an exact dupe of Chanel Mademoiselle and the Q10 creams are amazing .
    Lidl gins are good too .

  14. Toby – isn’t there abundant, great, locally sourced, fresh produce in Madeira? Why do you want Lidl?
