112 new cases of Covid to start this week.

There are currently 112 new cases of SARS-CoV-2 infection reported in RAM. These are 2 imported cases and 110 of local transmission.

There are another 83 recovered, and the Region currently has 909 active cases, of which 41 are imported and 868 are of local transmission.

  2. Yes. Local infections – not tourists. So how do you think it’s being spread if most locals are vaccinated. Yes – children. It’s about time children were vaccinated, just like measles, etc etc.
    This attitude will destroy your tourism.
    I have missed 4 holidays in Madeira at huge cost. I dare not yet book my flights for next year.
    Tobi – this post from you is very thoughtless for Madeira – as it appears local transmissions – ie from children – and soon from students coming back home – will make Madeira off the holiday list for many owners who love coming there.
    I think you should think more than twice before you post comments like this.
    I’ve supported you so far, but this post of yours is ridiculous!

    1. We vaccinate children against measles etc. for their own protection not for the protection of adults. Adults are here to protect children – it is not their job to protect us! Whether they are vaccinated is a matter for their parents and if my family decide to have our children vaccinated your feelings will not be taken into consideration – the well-being of our children is the only criteria. Perhaps you also ought to check the facts as to transmission – it is now widely proven and understood that vaccination protects you from severe disease – it does not stop a vaccinated person from transmiting it. This culture of blaming others is really rather sinister.

  7. I entirely agree with Jayne and others. It is time children were vaccinated just like all other things they have been vaccinated for. It’s been known for years that children are superspreaders of illnesses and whilst very little affected themselves they take things home to grandparents and elderly relatives.
    I also agree with Jayne Tobi sorry, the whole purpose of a blog is NOT for the blogger to air his views and political preferences nor to delete or edit others views if they happen not to agree with his own. Unless it is inciting riots or spreading fake news or worse encouraging those who wish to continue their perverted thoughts by way of social media or blogs of this type, you need to curb your written thoughts. Thinking them is one thing, printing them is quite another

Elizabeth I’m taking it you too are an adult and a parent, if so I’m also assuming you had your kids vaccinated to protect them and others from diseases both incurable and life threatening, if so what you are saying makes no sense. No one said children are here to protect us however it’s a well known fact children do spread infections very quickly and are superspreaders of many illnesses, fact hence many known CHILDHOOD illnesses now have vaccinations to prevent the spreading within schools

    1. I am both of those things – and a scientist involved in this type of research so I expect my level of expertise is rather greater than yours. It makes perfect sense: we vaccinate children to protect children from childhood diseases that uniquely threaten them and others in their age cohort – and I emphasis childhood diseases – we do not vaccinate them in order to protect adults from childhood diseases. In this case you are demanding that young children should be vaccinated against a disease that rarely causes them any difficulties in order to protect you and adult. Every parent will make up their own mind as to what is best for their child – and I assume they – as I – will put their child’s well-being first – not yours.

        If you don’t agree please feel free to not read it in future .
        Finally , someone missing their holiday matters not to me . There are far more important things to worry about than that.

        1. Exactly! I think freedom of opinion works both ways don’t you – why do you feel that as I disagree with some posts that I should not read the blog or take part in the discussion? As it happens, I read the blog because we are a dual-national family (this is my husband’s home) so it is always good to balance the local viewpoint of family and friends against wider interests.

          1. You’ve hit the nail on the head Elizabeth! We all need to respect that others may think differently than us . For Tobi to be silenced as Jayne would like is outrageous . I am vaccinated and my family chose to be too . I’m glad my grandchildren are old enough to make their own decision . I could not make that decision for a 5 year old simply because others want it done .

I agree we should be here to protect the children so therefore get them vaccinated to protect THEM and others just like adults we take the vaccine to protect ourselves and also in a lesser form agreed to hopefully assist in the prevention of others getting it from us, same as the wearing of masks

    1. British numb nuts demanding Madeirans vaccinate their children! A guy spouting falsehoods and propaganda, then accuses the site owner of bias. A paid for shill who told people to ‘not persuade others to their point of view” and then fanatically, almost daily, tries to persuade others of her views.
      I know it’s just a job to these people and next week they will be promoting Pfizer’s shaving cream or designing posters to cut down on knife crime in London, but come on guys, it’s too obvious.

  10. However Elizabeth we bow to your holier than thou scientific background approach, what do you think I am a hobo? If you are as you say from a scientific background you should also be able to accept the fact that every so called expert and scientist has a different view and thought on the identical subjects and each of them with God complexes think they are right. If you read the content of my text correctly you will see I didn’t demand that children should be vaccinated I simply stated that they should be vaccinated as a matter of course just like we administer all other vaccinations.
    I didn’t demand they should be vaccinated to keep me safe, I’ve had covid and survived however my younger brother in UK died from it, passed to him by his 7 year old grandson who had no symptoms but brought it home from junior school where it was rife amongst this very age group we are now planning to vaccinate now. I’ve been vaccinated 3 times, tested twice weekly as I work at the hospital on the covid ward frequently and have a sense of social respect and responsibility and believe that vaccinations and masks are necessary to protect ourselves AND others no matter of what age they are!

    2. I am not the one name-calling – although I don’t think I’ve been described as holier than thou before! Of course we all have different views – research wouldn’t get very far if we all just accepted one opinion and did not inquire, research, test and validate. I respect your views and your right to hold them, but how many vaccinations and tests you have are a matter for what you feel is right for you and is required in your working environment – a regime my husband follows in ICU so I am well aware of that environment – but perhaps you could extend the same courtesy to me when you talk about ‘social respect and responsibility’. I too have had covid as did my sister – I am fine – heartbreaking she was not. I am really sorry for your loss – in our grief we have come to different conclusions as to vaccinating children.

  12. Everybody’s talking about vaccinating young children, but I think the real focus should definitely be on schools themselves. The only precaution being taken, at least at my school, is the use of masks (at least, most of the time) and weekly testing; there is barely any social distancing or disinfection, and other COVID measures generally aren’t taken, other than vaccination for those who can get it.

    There are a lot of crowds during the morning breaks where I study; I don’t really understand why there isn’t any pressure on schools to enforce COVID measures better, or to switch to online school. I personally don’t really like online school, but I’d much rather have it over physical school if we’re reaching almost a thousand active cases with only minimal measures in schools, especially considering how most students also have two parents, who are definitely more at risk for COVID.

  13. The great thing about vaccinating the younger age group is that their parents can decide based on their own beliefs so to hell with what other people may think its their discission. Everyone one dies at some point its just another choice in life just accept that people have different views and don’t think you should ram your views down other peoples throats they tend to get upset.
