Tourists wash tent in Funchal

Two women carried out an act a moment this Wednesday, next to the Church of São Pedro, in Funchal,  which raised smiles with passersby. 

The two women – allegedly tourists – took the opportunity to wash their tent, in a public fountain, and were later approached by an official to stop the situation.

    2. Top dollar… the cheapest business BA flight to Funchal is around £380 pounds, with no avoid used. not cheap unless flying Ryanair or easyJet which I never use…

  2. How trashy…ugh, I see more and more of this kind of behavior. What next? Wash your knickers and bra in the public fountain. Or why not, bathe there while you’re at it?

    1. Or they could have slept in a dirty tent. Do you know the circumstances as to why the tent needed washing. Perhaps you would have been happy sleeping in a dirty tent. It seems you would be happier wearing dirty knickers and a bra rather than washing them. Don’t be so judgmental.

      1. At least I know that you don’t do your dirty laundry (or tent) in public. There is no excuse for this. They, like everyone else, can do their washing in the appropriate place. In the street next to a church is not acceptable, imagine all the dirt and water spilling around for everyone else and making it impossible for others to pass or use the fountain for what it’s meant for. This kind of selfish and disgusting behaviour leads to a poorer quality of life for all. I guess if they need the toilet, they can go in the street because they “need” it? Ridiculous.

          1. I wonder if there would be outrage. The notion of appropriate dress, speech and conduct seems to have been lost to many. We’d probably hear excuses about mental health, needing to test boundaries, being young, being old, needing a bath…

          2. Let us not imagine this was in Rome but remember it was in Madeira and that the fountains are public, for the use of both us peasants and you that look down on us. There is a bit of a difference between the Trevi fountain and the tap in the wall the girls are using.

    2. Lavinia I am from Madeira and these kind comments are just not acceptable and how dare you make them shame on you. For your education and you are obviously in need some most of the fountains in Madeira were originally built exactly for that use washing clothes and washing yourself and drinking if you did not have fresh water.Most Madeirans welcome all sorts of people from all walks of life and as you will notice from the news text it raised a smile. Your opinion is exactly the opposite of what most Madeira people think thank God. If you do not like IN YOUR OPINION what the island is becoming then you know you can do. Leave and take your judgmental opinions with you.

Paul, i use a low-cost airline, and will be coming over for my 26th visit in September and 27th visit in December, if you would like to come and tell me in person why i am a ‘consequence’ you can find me in Pub NO.2 most evenings, not getting pissed but spending money into the economy and having a pleasant time.

    1. I’m sorry, I missed the part where Mike mentioned that he was the sole occupant on the jet. Maybe he just filled a seat that would have otherwise been empty. The jet would have still made the flight with other people along with the cargo that is shipped to the island in the belly of the plane. Maybe Mike is a hero for filling that empty seat and contributing to the local economy.

    2. Please tell us how, if Mike flies it’s a childish whim, yet when you fly the environmental cost is justified. Explain why the selfish and capricious have no reason to travel abroad but you do. Why them flying cheaply damns the world but your travels don’t.

        Do you purchase and utilize any products that have arrived on the island via air freight? Or by ship? If yes, your posture is hypocritical. We can boil it down to transport as well, if you walk everywhere with footwear made from products native to the island then you can rightfully stand by your sentiment. If not, your actions have a negative impact on the environment too. Just because it’s convenient to YOU doesn’t mean you can justify your participation in the destruction of the environment while calling out others.

  7. Do we have to have these, to say the least, unhelpful comments on this site. After coming to Madeira for 22 years I’ve been unable to come for the last three years and really miss it.

    1. You only suspect I don’t know how to behave in public, you’re slipping. You’re not admitting to perhaps the possibility of being wrong about something. From a photograph of two young ladies, you are able to ascertain they are, low class, users of low cost airlines, idiots, with no reason to travel abroad, and total losers who suck everything they can out of their destination. I see two young ladies with the confidence to take a foreign holiday on a beautiful island, perhaps without the funds to spend on a hotel but determined to enjoy themselves, who are taking the opportunity to clean both themselves and their tent in a public facility, harming no one. Who put you on such a pedestal that you can sit in judgment and insult people of whom you know nothing about, their lives, circumstances and actions? Yes, I get worked up I may have the misfortune to come across you in Madeira.

    Madeira would be nothing without the nice tourists that come hear and the quality that we get is not of that like for example the canaries, to which I have visited and observed people behaving in a gross manner.
    Be grateful for what we have and what it contributes to this island, and shame on those that can’t see it.

  10. Sorry if I’m guilty of sparking off even more comments. I don’t go in for name calling. As one of the commentators said, we should be grateful for what we’ve got. As mentioned in a previous comment I’ve been coming to Madeira for many years and some restaurant owners, souvenir shop owners and market traders and their families have become very good friends. We’ve watched their children grow from babies to now university students. I hope they will benefit from the influx of tourists and the cruise ships coming back. They deserve to after the last two and a half years.

    1. Aline, how true. Let us welcome all tourists, not just those in our social group but those, like myself who use cheap airlines, campers, perhaps even extend the welcome to those who use Witherspoons and Aldi.

  13. Tobi, at the top of the page it says 31 comments but when counting them there are only 22. Is there a reason for this ? One of the correspondents, Jane, wrote 2 forthright comments, both missing. Is it a lack of space?

        1. It’s his private website and he is paying for hosting space. He can delete any comments he wants, including mine, for whatever reason. Free speech doesn’t apply here, that’s about governments preventing citizens from participating in public discourse.

      2. Tobi, Deleted swearing, rude, and etc? My posts were not rude and contained no swearing. I guess my deletions were covered under “etc” which apparently means “ an opposing view” . My posts were civil and not rude in any way. Not good at all. Please consider that those actions are the quickest way to send viewers away to another site.

  15. Well that shouldn’t be allowed to be happen camping in like that at all their is the right places for doing that . If people only can afford buying the plane ticket then they should not to come only gives a bad impression to the area. I never seen before in many times been visiting my mother in Madeira.

    1. Isabel – Are you visiting with your eyes open? Maybe you sould try cleaning up the local dirty junkies roaming the streets of Madeira 24 hours a day robbing people and there cars houses businesses any chance they get.

    I don’t know what streets you are visiting or seeing ? This is a excellent description of the UK their is plenty places their like that their . And add their that when they go to the countryside and to the beaches they live all the rubbish behind . I lived in UK from 1999 until 2018 and seen a lot in Scotland were I did live 11 years in Linlithgow and in Darlington and I did see plenty . And for your information when I go to Madeira is only to visit my mother and go hiking . And lets hope that the UK don’t see the rising of homeless peolpe like in USA don’t forget to say thanks to the Tory party and the greased piglet that is a complete parasite

    However you are correct about POVERTY is coming fast and will hit hard everywhere and everyone including the UK and MADEIRA be under no illusions.

    We can only HOPE not see MADEIRANS in the future queuing 10 blocks around the corner to get to the FOOD BANK.

  19. Well no country is prefect and as far the food banks in Madeira that did happen during the begin the pandemic that did affect a lot of people their and over the world . You should be grateful and counting your blessings that you are living their and benefiting of all the benefits that the Portuguese government gives and paying less taxes and crime begin less . As far the UK it is a tragic situation and sad and even before I left you could see that wasn’t anymore the country I knew from years ago it is complete divide and broken . Enjoy living Madeira and I’m enjoying living in Sintra village beside with the tourists in high season lets hope that with the winter will be more quiet . As far Madeira isn’t anymore the island that I knew from years ago lot of change improving a lot the lives of people but certain things are gone complete . The excess of tourists lets hope will not bring another problems needs to be controlled like were in Sintra too much .
