With just a few minutes to go before the start of the main race of the ‘Volta a Cidade do Funchal 2022’, downtown Funchal is already full of people, including athletes and the general public, who don’t want to miss a ‘pinch’ of what is a of the oldest São Silvestre competitions in Europe, where several regional, national and international athletes appear.
With several different races, with the race for the youngest, the ‘March of Health’, the race for athletes with wheelchairs and the queen race, which starts at 8 pm, on Avenida Sá Carneiro, this edition of ‘Volta à Cidade do Funchal’ brings together more than 3,300 athletes from 24 countries, making this one of the sporting competitions with the biggest promotion poster in the Madeiran capital.
It should be noted that this year, this mythical end-of-year road race, which is organized by the Associação de Atletismo da Madeira, in partnership with the Municipality of Funchal, is dedicated to the fight against domestic violence. In this way, the funds for the walk will be delivered to the Fund for Provision of Rentals for Families with Domestic Violence and the t-shirts used by the athletes contain messages alluding to the cause.
