Walls of Funchal Cathedral with graffiti

The exterior walls of the Funchal Cathedral dawned this Wednesday with various writings, commonly known as graffiti.

Writings of an offensive nature and with some political messages, for example “F#@k the system” and even encourage new acts that could constitute vandalism.

As it is a building classified as national heritage, it can be considered a public crime.

  1. This is horrible. And yes, should definitely be charged as a blatant crime. Absolutely no respect for the history of ‘their’ island and heritage. Awful.

    1. I agree completely. There should be a hefty fine and a criminal charge and some jail time.

  3. This is disgusting, absolutely no respect for anything or anybody. We are now reaping the fruits of doing away with corporal punishment and a very liberal attitudes towards criminals.

    1. Agree totally with Bruce Lee.I’m an occasional visitor, although a few years now. That is terrible and sadly it’s all over the world. England is bad in places and a visit to Rome was spoiled by seeing so much of it everywhere.

    2. I totally agree the same thing has happened in England over the last 50 years where too much liberalism has caused the fickle to just cross barrier’s of decency.They worked on the principle of being far too lenient on crime and look where it’s got us now.

      Graffiti has kind of destroyed many cities in Germany as well. No matter where you go, it’s Graffiti everywhere. Ugly as can bee that stuff

  4. This is an absolute shameful disgrace. We have visited Madeira several times and have found the island and its people to be very kind and welcoming. The Cathedral is an important building in the island’s history and heritage. This type of wanton vandalism is an insult to the people of Madeira. I do hope the idiot who did this is found and dealt with accordingly

    2. I doubt that any tourist would do anything as despicable as this. I agree that no true Madeirense would do this but, there has been an increase in immigration of descendants of Madeirans who previously emigrated to the likes of South Africa & Venezuela.

  6. This is an offence against the people of Madeira and their religious beliefs. Unfortunately its part of having an open border policy and a soft punishment policy.

  7. If I may weigh in on this…I’m not so sure it is locals or tourists. There are others here that have brought the good, the bad, and the ugly from their respective native cultures…..and many of them have kids/young adult kids. Let’s let the authorities figure it out. If our resident alcoholic German in our otherwise peaceful little town had any spare time on his hands from his constant, foul mouthed graffiti plastered on walls and sidewalks, I might suspect him. But he doesn’t have a car and he doesn’t know how to spell as well as the spray can anti system crusader in Funchal. With our western penchant for making a dumpster fire out of our traditions, rules and decency, I think we might see a lot more of this.
