The last 7 families that were in RG3 have already been relocated

President of the Funchal municipality wanted the solution to be resolved before Christmas.

Funchal City Council reports that it has already relocated all seven families who, having been displaced months ago by the Óscar depression, were still living in Garrison Regiment No. 3 (RG3), will now be able to spend Christmas at home. “Pedro Calado reveals that the municipality sought to resolve the situation in the shortest possible time so that families could spend Christmas with dignity”, writes the municipality in a news item shared on its Facebook page.

In a news item accompanied by a photo of the mayor and part of his team with one of the beneficiaries, the CMF explains: “The Funchal City Council has already relocated the last 7 families that were provisionally located in RG3- Army installations, in São Martinho. The families were left homeless following the Óscar depression, which occurred on the 6th of June, which resulted in damage to the structure of block II of the Canto do Muro III building, in the parish of Santa Maria Maior.”

And he adds: “The president of the Funchal City Council, accompanied by the councilor responsible for Housing, Helena Leal, handed over the keys on the 20th of December. The families were rehoused in buildings in the Municipality, namely in the housing complexes of Canto do Wall I; Old Zone; Romeiras and Bairro de Santa Maria.”

Quoting Pedro Calado, the note reveals that “the municipality had to find an alternative situation to prevent families from spending Christmas in RG3, relocating in the Municipality’s dwellings, which were, however, available and were rehabilitated in record time”, with the mayor to recall that the CMF, “from September 14, 2023 to the present date, was unable to conclude in a timely manner with the Ministry of Justice the signing of a protocol, with a view to these families being transferred to 7 dwellings allocated to prison guards of the Funchal Prison Establishment (EPF) and which were empty”.

Helena Leal added that, “from the beginning of the process, the municipality sought to resolve the relocation of these families in the housing complexes under the management of the Municipality in the shortest possible time: in June, 1 T2 was allocated in Quinta Josefina; in July 1 T3 in Santo Amaro; in August 1 T3 in Palheiro Ferreiro and this month December we allocated 5 more homes to the last families that were in RG3, namely 1 T1 in Canto do Muro I; 1 T1 in Zona Velha; 2 T3 in Romeiras and 1 T1 in Bairro of Santa Maria”.

The note ends with the gratitude of the President of the Municipality of Funchal to the military and employees of RG3 for all their “support” and “availability” in welcoming families during this period.
