Anticyclone arrives in Madeira at Christmas

Christmas Eve may have rain. Showers will be mostly on the north and mountains, with the south having plenty of sunny periods over the Christmas period.

The Portuguese Institute of Sea and Atmosphere announces today that, between the 22nd and 26th of December, the “weather in the Madeira archipelago will be influenced by an anticyclone, located to the north” and that it will “gradually move towards the Iberian Peninsula ”. As if that weren’t enough, Madeira will also be under the influence of “a depression at altitude centered to the south/southeast”

Therefore, IPMA points out, “days with periods of very cloudy skies and the occurrence of showers are expected, generally weak and infrequent, being more likely on the 22nd and 24th”.

The wind, reveals the same IPMA communication, “will start to blow weak to moderate from the east/northeast, sometimes strong in the highlands, and will weaken from the night of the 22nd to the 23rd”, and it is expected that from the the 23rd is “generally weak and predominating in the eastern quadrant”.

Maximum temperatures should generally register “values between 16 and 22°C, being lower in the highlands where values between 10 and 12°C can be recorded”.

The minimum temperature should register “values between 12 and 18°C, being lower in the highlands where values between 0 and 5°C can be recorded”.

The sea agitation will be more intense on the north coast and at the beginning of the period, with waves from the north/northeast measuring 2.5 to 3.5 meters, expected to gradually decrease to a significant height of less than 2 meters from the 23rd.
