Top researchers debate our deep sea next week

Between the 18th and 19th of December, the International Symposium “MAD-Deep: Madeira Deep-Sea Symposium” will take place in Funchal, more precisely at the Rectory of the University of Madeira, at the Colégio dos Jesuítas, an event organized by MARE-Madeira/ ARDITI in partnership with SEDES and supported by the Oceano Atlântico Association, Foundation for Science and Technology and Baillie Gifford.

“MAD-Deep brings together renowned scientists and leaders linked to the oceans in Portugal and Europe and aims to share knowledge, strengthen partnerships and think about ideas on how to accelerate deep sea research in Madeira”, says a press release. “In particular, this event will feature the presence of Jan Dierking from GEOMAR, in Germany, an internationally renowned institution in marine research, who will coordinate a large research expedition in the deep sea, in which MARE-Madeira is a partner”.

A mission “led by Dierking and planned for February 2024” and which “will be launched precisely in Funchal at the event taking place next week”, he highlights. “MAD-Deep will also have as speakers Telmo Morato and Marina Carreio Silva, recognized deep water researchers from OKEANOS, Azores, Kirsten and Joachim Jakobsen, from the Rebikoff-Nigeler Foundation, whose contributions to deep water research and documentaries were presented on BBC’s Our Planet and Blue Planet II and also Eugenia Barroca, Regional Representative for Lusofonia and Representative for Europe of the Sustainable Ocean Alliance (SOA), the world’s largest network of next generation leaders in the field of oceans”, adds the note.

According to MARE-Madeira/ARDITI, “this initiative is open to the public, who can participate in the symposium and ask questions, believing that decisions regarding the protection and use of the oceans must be taken in community, therefore appealing to registration from anyone interested”, he urges.
