Today is the biggest and most popular Market Night in Funchal, one of the most notable events of the Christmas season, which takes place in the Mercado dos Lavradores and surrounding streets, attracting thousands of people. This year, the event will have 16 hours of entertainment and 57 commercial spaces, mostly stalls.
Market Night, an organization of the Funchal City Council, is a “traditional festival” in which the municipality relies on several traditional groups that will perform along the streets. The singing fraternity, which has been operating for over 35 years, in Praça do Peixe, will receive a distinction from the local authority this year. The songs will be broadcast on a giant screen at the entrance to Mercado dos Lavradores, the result of a partnership with DIÁRIO de Notícias da Madeira.
The biggest restrictions on car circulation occur from 3:30 pm, although Rua Latino Coelho and Rua da Boa Viagem have already been closed since yesterday.
12 public and private car parks will be in operation, with a capacity for 4,000 spaces, most of which will be open until 7am on Sunday.
Market Night, held in partnership with DIÁRIO de Notícias and Empresa de Cervejas da Madeira, represents an investment by the municipality of around 100 thousand euros.
