Albuquerque called a Government meeting for this morning

The president of the Regional Government called an Executive meeting for this morning (10 am), at Quinta Vigia.

From what was possible to ascertain, the meeting was called a few minutes in advance and should serve to analyze the Government’s situation after, yesterday, Miguel Albuquerque communicated his resignation to the Representative of the Republic.

  1. In case the accuseitions will be proven as true: Welcome Madeira in the real world. And dont let LIDL ruin the last small neighborhood businesses.

    1. Can you explain why LIDL would destroy small businesses and therefore it is better to keep Pingo and Continente? It’s an “interesting” view you share here…

      1. Hello Oliver,
        I live in Germany and partly in Madeira. In Germany the Neighborhood stores are almost completely gone due to the marketpower of the big players (Aldi, Lidl, Netto, Rewe, Edeka, Kaufland). On Madeira there still exist the little stores, where we buy fruits and vegetables, have a bica ore poncha and most important have a chat with locals.
        This is what I meant. Of course LIDL woud bring some German goodies to the island but the additional big player with discount prices certainly could harm what I think is an infrastructure worth keeping.
        Dont get me wrong: Mr. Schwarz, the owner of KAUFLAND and LIDL is a great and honorable Fellow who build a fantastic business out of almost nothing.

I’m glad you are able to live in Germany and Madeira and I’m not being facetious saying that, but your wish to keep Lidl out of Madeira to retain the infrastructure does not take into account the wishes or needs of Madeirans whose main wish is to see their Euros go further. As the Madeiran man said, “I wish people would stop telling us Madeirans what we should do.”

          1. You are absolutely right. It was not my intention to tell any Madeiran citizen what he should do. This would be very unpolite as a guest on this island.

        2. Hey Manfred,
          I’m from Germany too. Your point of having variety in Germany is not taking into account that this is an oligopol of the 4 big players we have there. They control 80% (checked the numbers) of food supermarkets. 4 players for 85 million people is not variety if you ask me. It’s rather controlling the market.
          Here on Madeira it is similar, just on a much smaller scale. It’s mostly 2 players. And Madeira needs more competition in that field. Best example: when the perfume store Primor arrived lately, the other stores started to give discounts. That’s what we need here: competition in all sectors
          Still I don’t get why small stores would turn down when LIDL (or another chain) would arrive here. There’s still space for the little veggie stores we visit regularly as well. It’s not that black and white from my experience.
          And Mr Schwarz you praise here is just another tycoon not paying taxes as he should since everything is organized in a foundation (so is ALDI).

  2. Everything here is owned by Continente (Sonae) or Pingo Doce. Even some of the little stores you talk. Do you think Amanhecer for example is local? This island needs variety. Everything belongs to the Sousas, don’t you get it? I will never understand how some of you, born in countries that have everything, came here and want this island to continue be so isolated, like it always have been.

    1. Obligado for your very interesting reply. Indeed I did not know the facts you wrote. This shows me that it is better as a guest on this island not to judge anything. Excuse my ignorance.
